Seat and lid here. It became a habit at home when I got pet cats and I still do it. The prompt for this questions was the fact that my roommate left seat and lid up but shut the door when he walked out...it baffles me really.

depends on where I am... public places i avoid touching it at all unless i have to. At home (away from Rolla) seat and lid... but here in Rolla, don't really care so i don't put it down.

I always have the seat down, but I'm lazy/strange and sit down for most of my business. I don't like the splattering that happens w/ a stand-up job. The lid though usually stays up, but I keep my toilets pretty clean.

Is there a non-sexist reason for putting the seat down, in general? For instance, Jeff puts it down so the cats don't drown.
It would seem it is more sanitary to have an on demand seat position stance: If it isn't how you like it, make it how you like it.
If you insist that the seat always go down, then all men must come in contact with the seat. If every person in the world used that toilet, then ~1/2 the population would be required to come in contact with the seat, regardless of ordering. With the on demand stance, men following men don't have to touch the seat and women following women don't have to touch the seat. Without doing the math, it seems like fewer people would come in contact with the seat, meaning that fewer people contaminate the seat with their hands, and fewer people must be exposed to the seat.

You do know that toilet seats typically aren't any dirtier than water fountains or doorknobs right?

more bacteria and stuff might be on doorknobs and drinking fountains..... but people don't normally piss and shit all over those things either... or at least have their hairy asses in contact with them

It really depends on which toilet I use and where that toilet is located. If I'm at my aptartment toilet, I just keep the lid up. No women live here, so it doesn't really matter if it goes up or down. If I'm in my gf's room at the rc, I'll put the seat back down since she lives in a suite with 3 other girls.

I leave it down, because I like to sit and read sometimes (and wouldn't want to sit on the rim by accident) and for the aforementioned issue with not wanting shit to fall in the toilet. If I'm in a rush, or don't feel like reading and I choose to pee standing up, then seat and lid come up, and go back down when the job is done.
Also - If you don't raise the seat when standing up that's just gross. I can always tell when my [nasty] brother has used my bathroom at home, because he will: raise lid (but not seat), pee standing up (and thus pee all over the seat without wiping it up), lower lid. To which I have to pose WTF - if you do the work of lifting the lid why not also lift the seat? And cleanup anything that doesn't make it to the bowl. </rant paragraph>
Blitz - I have to agree about saving time & effort by simply leaving the seat in whatever configuration you used it last, but I think the practical reasons for leaving it up outweigh this. Its also courteous to women, who will infallibly manage to fall into any toilet whose seat has been left up. How they manage this, I don't know, because they usually like the lid down. If the lid is down, you have to raise it, and thus should always look before you sit. Also - I can't believe i put this much thought into this post.
