I'm pretty happy right now that I dropped one of his classes earlier this semester. I gave him a shot, despite his reputation, but there really is something wrong with the guy.

No, that emblazoned text has been on his website longer than just the past week (source: myself after a friend in his class showed me while trying to explain how crazy this dipsh... professor is).

From all the stories I've heard, the guy's definitely a douche... and he's probably truly pissed about the ratings on ratemyprofessor.. but I think anyone with PhD is probably not dumb enough to think they'd win a suit against the website AND get $100M

QFT, which to me makes him seem like even more of a douche and/or pissed off wittle baby throwing a tantrum.
However, I have no idea what the guy is actually like, having never met him. I feel sorry for the people in Linear Algebra this semester... when I took that class, it was one of the easiest A's I've gotten while at UMR.
I'm actually quite familiar with Insall and the way he conducts his courses. While I will say that his method of professing (read: he does not directly teach as much as guide you) can be difficult for some students, I do believe that for the truly motivated individual, the rewards of his courses waaaay outweigh any perceived shortcomings. That is to say: if you are looking for a professor to hold your hand every step of the way, take someone else. If you are willing to be more independent and disciplined in your studies, you can learn a substantial amount more than your peers when you take Insall.
As far as Insall being bitter or "crazy", I can honestly say that he is neither. He may not be happy about what some people have to say about him, but in the end it's all about the math for him.

I'm taking Linear Algebra with Roger Bunn as my instructor. It's a very interesting and motivating class. However, the other students in the class are plotting against Insall and Bunn through the power of passive-aggressive petitions.

Ha! Professors have tenure. They will have nothing at all to do with your smarmy little "petitions". It's not like you're trying to get the professor's removal from the class on the March student body ballot.
