I was wondering if UMR gives students hosting space, if not, does anyone know of some good cheap ones that allow posting, for images mostly.

Yes they do. It is your AFS account. Just have to configure it for public access.

Go to the helpdesk webpage. They can walk you through it there. Or talk to, well, practically anyone living near you who has a webpage.

Yeah, 4, 5, something like that (50). Actually, they upped it and I think it is 100 now. Not quite enough for those of us off campus, plenty for those on campus.

Telnet in to telnet.umr.edu ...from there, telnet to gpunix.umr.edu .

Once you're there, you can issue all those commands

Rocket IS gpunix. it's all the same box now.

Actually, I think "rocket" is "gpunix1" and "saucer" is "gpunix2".

Last year, one of the guys in TJ actually HAD rocket (the original) in his room.

On a related note, telnet.umr.edu is also gpunix1.

I doubt you can still use ftp, but a secure ftp, like WinSCP
should work fine. See:

yes you can use what ever you want, word, dreamweaver, vi, whatever you want.
and you used to be able to mount your AFS space as a samba drive on your machine. which can be more "fun" than ftp becouse you can run stuff right at it.http://campus.umr.edu/cis/helpdesk/connect/general/afs/samba.html
