Whereas, with a clear majority of people in favor of such an amendment, the United States Congress should be moving with deliberate speed to consider the matter, especially given the events of September 11, 2001, the pending threat of war with Iraq, the escalation of tensions with North Korea, and the ongoing war on terror being waged in Afghanistan:

How does 9/11 have ANYTHING to do with prayer in schools?

amendment to the United States Constitution to permit voluntary school prayer

Wow, thanks. I am pretty sure I can already pray in school. I am glad I need permission from the government.

I really dont get it at all. That looks pretty useless. The wording is pretty vague. If someone wants to voluntarily pray anywhere to themselves, seems like they would have every right to do so...

It's the first step to get mandatory prayer back in public schools.

Kids can already pray by themselves or in groups whenever they want, so long as they are not disruptive. School officials who prevent kids from praying have been successfully sued (as they should be). What do we need this for?

The way they explained it on the news, is it isn't a bill or anything, so it would have no importance other than like a statement. I just thought some people on here would get a kick out of it...

Ridiculous. Never gonna happen. Let's just for a second assume that all the religious groups get together and lobby for mandatory prayer in school. Whose prayer do they say? Muslims probably wouldn't lobby for christian prayer in school. So you're probably down to just christians lobbying for it. But protestants won't pray to Mary or any saints. So you've got a catholic vs. protestant thing going on there. Assuming there's enough protestants to make it happen. Whose protestant prayer gets said? There's about a bazillion denominations out there and some of them have some pretty crazy ideas that other denominations won't like.

Besides, most christians (and christian groups) understand that forcing someone to "be religious" is the best way to prevent them from ever becoming actual christians. I could definitely see the atheists pushing for mandatory prayer. Most christians believe that the single worst thing that ever happened to christianity as a whole was it becoming a state-sponsored official religion. That turned it from a relationship with God into a political, social, and cultural club - nothing but a religion. And most people don't know this, but Jesus didn't like religious people. The separation of church and state isn't just to protect the people from getting religion forced on them - it also protects religion from being turned into the kind of thing that happened in europe in the dark ages.

In short, no, I don't support this amendment. We shouldn't have public schools. They are just mandatory brainwashing into the "nanny-government" mindset. Be a good little government-trained socialist drone, and tell me that public schools promote free thought, and that we would never have achieved our high level of education without the government telling us what to do.

Can you explain this a bit further? I've always been of the opinion that ignorance and stupidity are some of the worst enemies of democracy. While I agree that it is possible for a child to learn (I guess "brainwashed" using your terminology) things that promote a "nanny-government" mindset, generally speaking, students are taught how to learn (basically, how to teach themselves) in school.

You're a fucking idiot. I've went to a public school from kindergarten through high school. None of that shit you mentioned took place. They didn't brainwash me, or turn me into a socialist drone. I got an education, and a damn good one at that.

Not just 9/11 but what does any of that paragraph have to do with prayer?

I went to public school k-12 and I can tell you that there is no brainwashing, in fact I believe most current governments are corrupt and worthless. Which would be the opposite of what a institution of brainwashing would try for. However, I also believe most schools (public or private) are worthless and barely teach anyone anything. Basically they are day-care facilities with fancy names.

I do believe that it is a first step to at least having school led prayer, however. You wouldn't need all the religous groups to agree on a religon for the prayer to be based on. You would just need an agreement from the politicians on what religon schools should pray.

Could you point out where exactly you found this so I can lay the smackdown on those door to door bible thumpers next time they pay me a visit?

I went to a public school and was constantly at odds with my teachers because I wouldn't accept the editorializing that they wanted to do outside of the subjects they were supposed to be teaching. I wouldn't say there is a national conspiracy, but a certain type of person tends to become a primary eduaction teacher and they seem to have a certain view of the way the world works.

He's talking about the Pharisees.

Anyway, I think we do need this amendment, because (I have in my memory that) there have been students that have been punished for praying in schools or passing out Christian things.

Um, sorry? Uhhh, don't do it? You seem like a reasonable guy (except that you apparently hate penises), and based on the majority of your posts (or at least based on your serious posts) you seem very intelligent. Therefore, I must do the world a favor and remove all guns from your presence. How much do you want for them ;)

Seriously, does the lack of sleep make me post things that don't make much sense?

I thought he made sense. I don't see what was wrong with his post.
