It's like the old man and the flood, where he gets on top of his house and tells all the boats that pass by that god will save him, then he dies when the water gets too high, goes to heaven and asks god why he didn't save him. God replies "you idiot, I sent four boats to help you!"
In my bioethics class (the book is a bit dated but...) we figured out that in the US, most states have exemptions to murder/manslaughter so that faith healing is exempt from them. Apparently there are a lot of influential Christian Scientists that got the laws passed.

Just a bit of perspective calc, nothing wrong with that is there? Though if you are interested in helping me draft some legislation to end bicycling in California I would much appreciate it.

I dont want to discredit the power of prayer but some people are just dumb
Prayer when someone is sick or injured plays a huge morale in everyone involved which in turn helps the healing process, but it works WITH medicine. Its not a choice of one or the other.

Eh 1 death for Christians to how many for secular progress?
This is not a battle between Christians and those who identify themselves as secular and progressive, but what you posted can be taken that way. "Secular" is the only identifier that directly comes into play here; Progressivism is the idea that calls for positive change for society. If anything it is a disagreement in methods between the spiritual (not necessarily the religious or Christians) and the secular methods we practice as a country and how they tie into our modern American law. The article did not mention Christianity once, unless I'm mistaken.
Plus, assuming they are Christians, how is this only one death for Christians? Christians die with similar relative frequency to more secular people. The method with which we handle life-threatening illnesses in minors is in question here, not the rate at which they die.
Perhaps I'm biased sense I tend to rely on secular methods and I hold many progressive ideals, but all I'm really saying is that your statement might be a tad misguided if the aim was to add perspective.
hope i cleared that up calcninja

I applaud you for trying to dance but your not hearing the tune.
A proper discussion can't be had by jumping into the middle of something and skipping all the steps before hand. Don't trust me on this though, I'm sure any lady friend you might have would give you similar criticisms.
People tend to get up in arms when someone dies a bad death. Our actions because of it should be tempered by how much it actually harms people and how many it harms. Thats the perspective I wanted to give.
and what was with this "Christians die with similar relative frequency to more secular people."?
