My granny's comp has started freaking out, as far as I know, there weren't any problems until the power flickered last week, now, when it goes to boot up, it generally just goes to the black screen with the message about power saving mode (like the comp is dead, but I still hear fans and other things running inside), sometimes it will go the the windows screen that has a little bar in the middle with blue dashes going through it and freezes up, but occasianally, it completely boots up, and then freezes.

Any suggestions on the possible cause, a virus is not very plausable since she doesn't have an internet connection, I was assuming a hardware problem but have no clue... Thanks in advance for any help.

well seeing as how it happened after the power flickerd id inspect the hardware side of things... first try a new powersupply.. it might have gotten fucked up due to the quick outage.. then check the mobo proc and ram.. after that perifial(?sp) cards. and finally the hdd cdrom etc

I would check the ram then cpu then mobo. That is usually the order they die in during power strikes.

If it was on, it sounds like the hard drive might be messed up. I'd attempt a chkdsk /r on the hard drive. If you can boot a live CD of some sort that'd be the best way.
