is there any good "preferbaly free and or opensource" image program or plugin that cleans up grainy images

I tryed to fix this pic in gimp with a plugin I found but it semed to do very littal to fix it.
is there any way to get rid of the noise in this pic I still have the negitive at home.

sorry for posting such a big pic
if you go to http://web.umr.edu/~jek2p4 you can find another that has even more noise. is there anyway to remove the unsightly noise

true but some pics are very hard to retake hence for crismas I am geting a nice digital slr so I dont have to wate for the film to be develuped to know if I got the shot or not.
the digital camera I want is the Nikon D70 0r D50
