Conroe is your friend. E6600, then overclock the shit out of it. Runs %30 faster than an FX-62 for about $350.

Yeah, that's probably your best bet, but I don't know much about the mobo's available for them right now. Someone else will have to help you there.

You might want to take a look at this motherboard:

Any reason you like the older chip set ip965 over the i975x in the one I posted. Other than that they seem to all have the same features.

The x1950 is nice (really nice), but if you're going to spend that kind of money, wouldn't you want to wait for DX10 cards, first? Just get a cheap card for now.

From what I've seen, it looks like the Ati DX10 cards (R600) won't be out until about this Christmas, if everything goes good.

I think the 965 series is newer than the 975 series, and is fully Core 2 compatible out of the box, while the 975 series would need a bios update.

Your build looks great, and very similar to the one I plan to build soon. But it'd be best to wait for the next gen video cards, hard as that may be.

I heard the DX10 cards will be released simultaneously with Vista (but, then again, Vista was supposed to be released this holiday season, so DX10 cards could very well still be coming out then).

Ya I think you sold me on waiting for a DX10 card, and just get a cheeper one until then. Anyone have ideas about the 6600 vs 6400 core 2?

Depends on what looks like a better deal. The e6600 is about $130 more than the e6400. Both overclock nicely, but the e6600 has 4 megs of cache, is faster, and uses the conroe core. The e6400 has 2 megs cache, is slower, and i think uses a different core. Check out Tom's interactive cpu chart and that might help you make your decision.
