I forgot the WEP key to my router so I was just going to reset the whole thing and re do everything. So the router is reset, but I cannot access it at all. I have tried typing 192.186.1.1 into the browser and nothing. No one in my house can figure it out, anyone out there have any suggestions?

It's 192.168.1.1, not 192.186.1.1

Also, sometimes auto-complete will change what you type in from "http://192.168.1.1" to "http://192.168.1.1/login" or something similar, which once caused me problems logging in to a linksys router.

Well, that was a typo i meant 192.168.1.1 and the auto complete isn't changing it.

Did you make a dumb little mistake like forgetting to plug it in to the outlet or hooking up the ethernet cables wrong?

you didn't use a crossover cable did you? or plug the computer's ethernet into the "WAN" port on the router? (just continuing the dumb mistakes suggestions -as those are the ones that get us all)

wtf would that have to do with it? I use firefox to access my Linksys config page all the time.

Are you trying to do this over wireless? plug into a LAN port on the router and see if that works, its best to do it over wired anyways, since if you mess with wireless settings, it might kick you off and if your new settings aren't correct, you can't get back in.

I tried pluging strait into the router (I run everything off a switch because the router is not close to my computers), and it had the same result.

Ok so now i have a new frustrating problem (even though I didn't fix the old one). For some reason my laptop will only work using a hard line. My mac on the other hand works with the wireless off of my router. My laptop won't work with my router but it will work with other routers wirelessly.

Are you getting an IP assigned from DHCP and it shows you are connected wirelessly to the correct SSID?

Not always is the default prefix for your ip 192.168.1.x. Use 'ipconfig' and make sure that is correct. x for your router will still most likely be 1 unless you changed that when you changed your WEP.

btw most modern switches are auto sensing so using a crossover won't really matter.
