Maybe this is just me or maybe it's something that's been going on since the start of the year, but I can't seem to get and DNS names to resolve it IPs anymore.

ex. ping r01user.desktop.umr.edu or r01user.device.mst.edu

I'm assuming that if this isn't just me, then it was something changed to try to deter file sharing, but I remember being able to still do this for most of first semester.

any ideas?

peace

No, firewalls are down. I couldn't do it on any computer that I own (two XP and one Ubuntu), nor the campus ones (but that makes more sense b/c of firewall).

peace

On the ubuntu box you'll have to install the winUPS package or something like that .... that's probably not the name, but there's something you have to install to resolve windows dns stuff... at least I had to on the server edition.

Anyways, ping might be trying to use another interface that doesn't have access to what you're trying to ping... got hamachi running? Wireless?
