Recently I had my Dell Inspiron 9400 stolen from me. Someone used it last Thursday around 12:20pm. I have filed a report with Campus PD and Rolla PD. If anyone has heard anyone mention a new laptop of the same model, please let me know. If someone wants to e-mail me personally you can, I will keep things anonymous.
Thanks

Hmmm, if someone plugged into the school network with it, then I would think that the IT department would be able to help you out as to the location. Not sure about this though, can anyone back me up on this?

Yea, IT can tell where its plugged in via ethernet, so it would help to let them know. Hope you get your laptop back.

Couldn't they also have a an idea where they guy is even on wireless by determining what access point he's using?

I think so. But (they may not actually release this info to anyone) if it's plugged in, it can be tracked down to what port, thus, what building and room....pretty much the exact location where the thief is.

A lot of enterprise wireless stuff (Cisco...) has some triangulation stuff also... can be pretty accurate.

They told me that they couldn't track it with wireless, because more than one access point use the same router. So that is a dead end.

Either have them disable the wireless for that MAC maybe to get him/her to plug in

Or get them to find out where this person is logging in at to figure it out. Shifty situation.

I wouldn't have IT disable it. They could just spoof the MAC address if it stops working. If it just keeps working they may be stupid enough to not worry about it. There has to be a way they can figure out which access point it is attached to. Even if the help desk guy can't, someone in IT can. I would try to contact Karl to see if he can help.
