.dmg is not an archive! it is the mac equivalent to a .exe

No, .dmg is not line a .exe at all. .dmg is a disk image which is mounted by the OS and then you can install the application that is stored on it (only used for mac applications)

in laymans terms, a .dmg is the mac equivalent to a .exe..

i know it's technically an archive.. but to "Joe Plumber" it will act like a windows .exe

I was trying to be blunt, since this guy doesn't know how to use google

A DMG is nothing like an EXE. It is merely an archive and does not execute anything.

You CANNOT open it and run the program because its probably for OS X. You can only burn it to a disk or convert it to an ISO for use on a OS X system.
