Is there a good Media Center OS that I can install on a slightly dated PC (new in 2003) that will allow internet access, or at least a connection to sites like Hulu or whatever? I'd like to move away from Windows, largely because there are a LOT of resources being used for functions I don't need, but are essential for XP to work right.

Ubuntu Linux if you just want to dump Winblows.

Or, if you're needing an actual media center OS there's eARs:

Commercial:
Too many to list off. Windows XP Media Center Edition is rather pleasant.

Free:
Ubuntu Linux with Freevo. I have it running on a 1 GHz Pentium III rather nicely. HD videos are no-go, but SD is perfect.

Freevo does not interface with Youtube, Hulu, Vimeo, or any other porn sites you kids are boob-toobing to these days. You'll have to navigate through Firefox.

I was hoping to avoid configuring another linux box, but maybe it will give me something to do between applying for jobs.

Yeah I was rather impressed with Boxee. I've barely even touched it, but I just checked it out since it's based on XBMC, which is awesome. Why mess with building an HTPC, when all I really need is to be able to stream media to a TV. XBMC does this amazingly well, plus it's so cheap and easy to setup.

I would second the boxee. My htpc is running windows 7 pro purely because I like to record my own tv shows instead of waiting for it to get posted online. You may consider waiting for a little bit and getting the boxee box when it comes out

I like boxee but I would never buy the boxee box unless it was somehow cheaper than the acer revo ($199)

"CEO Avner Ronen told NewTeeVee that he hopes to price the box for less than $200, but given the cost of hardware involved, Boxee probably won’t be able to reach the $100 price point that Roku has for its IP video set-top box."
