While I suppose that will help others, once again, I'm near Chicago and don't know when I'll be back in Rolla, so offers to sell me used stuff and telling me Walmart has a deal don't really help. So far the best idea I've heard has been to have the line run to the ground floor and have it go wireless there, use a USB wireless on the basement computer and then have a wireless uplink into a switch and wire the top floor. So me next question is, what exactly do I need to buy to do this? I know I'll need a USB wireless thing for the basement. But what else will I need to buy?

Figure out where you can install your modem; It makes a big difference in the type of equipment you'll need to buy.

If installed in the basement (more likely, less desirable):

Get a regular wired router/firewall. Install the modem and router with the computer in the basement and use a standard Ethernet card to hook it up to the network since most wired routers also have a 4-5 port switch in them also. Then get enough Cat 5 or Cat 5e cable to run to the floor where the remainder of the computers will be. In this case the second floor. By the book, you have a bit more than 300ft (the spec says 100m) of cable to reach the place where you want to install your wireless Access Point or AP. Be sure to avoid running parallel to house wiring or florescent lights unless they are 3 feet apart or more, otherwise you run the risk of flooding your network cable with noise since we are dealing with un-shielded wires. Once you have your AP mounted, install wireless adapters in the remaining computers.

If installed on the second floor (less likely, but cheaper):

Get a Wireless router with a firewall and a 4-5 port switch on the back. Use Cat 5 or Cat 5e cable to connect your computer in the basement with a standard Ethernet card. Again be careful not to run close and parallel to full voltage electrical wires to prevent interference. Now all you have to do is install your wireless adapters in the remainder of the computers and you’re done with the hardware.

Setting up the router will very from internet company to company. Most will only install the modem onto one computer before you leave, then expect you to set up your network. Other will install the modem to the network for a charge, some for free.

Some of this has probably been said before. But I'm too tired to sort out everyone elses advice.

I live in a two-story house and have a 802.11b/g wireless network. All Wireless G stuff is backwards compatible with B adapters. Put the router on the first floor (if there is a computer or two there save some money and wire them into the network). That way you can get signal in the basement and upstairs. That's what I did and it works just fine. There aren't any real signal problems.

If your dad wants to have the cable modem installed on the Basement computer at first you may need to enable the MAC Address masking function of the router, using the basement computers MAC Address. I had to do that to my set up to get it to work properly.
