i was wondering some methods that those of you "more experienced" file sharing folk do to monitor and/or restrict others on your computer. right now all im doing is putting everything in shared docs, but ive gotten pretty far into other ppls computers, just to see, and some are pretty damn open. I want to share my media, but want to be safe from wannabe net hackers. thanks

First of all, if you are using XP turn off simple file sharing. You don't have to move everything to a shared docs folder, just right click a folder, select sharing, click permissions, and make sure only the the read box is checked. Also you might want to get a copy of NetWatcher Pro or a similar program to watch/log/cap the users connected to your computer.

When I lived on campus, I did jack squat to restrict people beyond read-only status on intentionally shared subdirectories. The only monitoring I did was checking my log file occasionally to see what people were interested in. I really don't see the point of heavy-duty monitoring or limiting when free sharing is the basis of making the network 'work'.

theres no point in disabling simple file sharing unless you wanna set up several users with different access. just share and dont enable "allow users to change my files" or whatever it says.
