Renting and can't keep a dog or cat?
Want something different in a pet?
Want to help me out?
I'm giving away, absolutely free, hand raised pet rats. They're a little over 2 months old and well behaved.
I had a male rat I bought a while back, and in December I thought it would be a good idea to find him a cage mate... should have double looked before I picked HER out. =(
So yeah, I have albinos and black/grey speckled males and females. The males are more curious and slightly more aggressive (they do NOT bite), while the females are more timid and slightly more calm.
I've found that they make excellent pets, and are very much trainable. I'm teaching my original to come to me when he's called. After you build their trust, they make great lap-pets.

Ok, all advertising aside (as you can tell, I suck at it), I need to get rid of a few of these things. They're fairly easy to take care of, but I've got 13 total at the moment and need to free cage room. You can take pairs (suggested) or loners (as long as you give them a lot of attention). I'd rather not give them out as snake food as they are fancy rats (there's a difference) and don't have their mental faculties bred out of them.
You can email me using campus mail:

Or just PM me.
Thanks for considering.

I've had one person email me so far. Again, they're great pets. They don't cost a fortune in food and bedding like cats and dogs. You can even give them baths after you get them used to it (my male rat loves bath time).
I'm using pine shavings at the moment... treated and baked to prevent dust. The pet store was out of the corn husk mix. Don't let the hype about pine shavings fool you. It's not the pine oils that hurt upper respiratory, it's the CEDAR you should ALWAYS stray away from... even with large pets like dogs or pigs.
As for food, I'm using a mix of rabbit and parrot. The parrot mix has the seeds they should eat without the excess corn, and the rabbit mix gives them more vitamins. I also give them carrots and little bits of lettuce from time to time (too much lettuce and they get upset stomachs). For a healthy coat, I try to give them a small piece of wheat bread with a dab of olive oil. Bananas are good, too, when I have them, and give them some of that at least once a day.
I'm using open aired cages. The males and females are split up obviously (don't want repeats of my earlier mistake), and I clean them at least twice a week. I could do with cleaning once every week or two weeks, but with 6/7 rats in a cage, I have to clean a lot more than that.
As for trimming their nails, I haven't got around to buying small dog clippers. That and the smaller rats toes aren't big enough yet to clearly see the pink parts of the nail.
amd2800barton: I was thinking about doing that a while ago... =P
kib: I dunno if you can. I found that I need to be there at the latest 9:30 AM since the flight leaves at 10:30 AM. I was thinking about taking the bus there Wednesday night and staying all night at the airport. Sucks for me, but I'll get reimbursed for it later if I do it that way. I'll know for sure what I'm doing Monday, so I'll keep all my options open. Thanks for the huge offer.
I'm really interested in getting one, probably an albino female. I need to get a place set up for it first though. I'll get back to you after I've talked to a few people.
So, 1 albino female possibly gone. Someone just PMed me about the 2 hooded males, so I'll have to check on that. I'll get back to everyone soon... stupid meetings and crap.

So, you say they have some "mental faculties" left? Do you think one of them could man an Estes rocket that I built?

I'm going to have to wait until I have some source of income before I go getting a pet. If you still have one by June I'll take it but don't worry about it if you find someone else to take them off your hands.
