N-America:
Core - 20gb $499 usd (smaller storage, no HDMI, no card reader, no Wi-Fi, likely to come with wired controller) Premium - 60gb $599 usd (HDMI, Mem card reader, wireless controller, Wi-Fi) controllers are exactly the same as PS2 but with 6 degrees of freedom without external sensor, just move the controller in the air ... and it tracks movement ... controller will come by default with every PS3.
I watched the entire show, there were several games that looked stellar and a few that looked horrible too.
I was pretty impressed by it, the only thing that I think that hurts them is that there is 2 systems sets (like the 360) by $100 difference, except that it's only a 40gb upgrade for the premium. Why exactly do I want to pay an extra $100 for that? Especially if it's supposed to support External HD's?
Then the controller seemed like a big flop in a PR standpoint. They kept the cool design, but they seemed to rip off of Nintendo's tilt design a bit so that you can move the controller to control the game. Seemed like a very complicated way to control a flying plane... with the tilt sensor what exactly do the 2 analog controls do? and do you actually have to make such exagerated movements to turn the plane or pull a 180?
The eyetoy seemed really cool. Being able to play games like Magic the Gathering by placing them on a white mat and having 3D images of the card appear on the screen seemed pretty inovative for an eyetoy. It might even bring MTG onto the net in a way never before seen, although I'm not sure how it'd work with magic since you could fix the decks...lol

I'm going to watch the highlights tonight. No chance yet today. No way they're going to be able to successfully keep it at that price. No way. They have to be taking an astonomical hit at that price. Plus, with the 360, you understand you got a lot more in the quote "premium" unquote edition, not just a bigger harddrive. Seems kind of fishy. Ah, well, competition is good for everyone. Just don't see Sony taking off as well as last generation. Just my two cents.
Well, there goes PS3's 1080p idea then. Yes, I know there's not "true" 1080p yet, but no way they're going to push the resolutions they've been touting.

i think it was more developers that burst that bubble, i believe that the ps3 could push 1080p but the gaming engines just arent there yet.
ill watch that some time tmrw, really interested in seeing this as we get closer to release
at least with this core/premium its with things that are actually expendable for the price. as most people will probably not be using HDMI in the immediate future, but maybe im wrong. The problem with the 360 was that you need either a HD or memory card to play and looking at the price tags mem card -$40 and 20gb HD - $100 theres really no reason for a memory card.

They're still touting 1080p resolutions, you just can't do it with the core system. Also don't forget you'll need to run a wired ethernet plug for the core system as it loses WiFi too.

I still think it's great, just to damn expensive. They probably went with 2 versions because the premium is in all attempts is probably what the PS3 was supposed to be, but at a $600 price it would have a hard time comparing itself to a $300 Xbox 360 and $200'ish Wii.
Hell, you'll be able to buy a premium 360 and a Wii for around $500 during Xmas 06' That really hurts them pretty bad.
MS said that if the PS3 was priced high that they would try to undercut them by a large margin by reducing the cost of the premium to $300 and Core to $240, but this is still really rumors from good sources.
This is way to expensive for me... and this is coming from someone who got a launch 360 w/ 8 games and I'm planning on buying a extra Core system in the next couple weeks for some homebrew stuff;)
On a side note, the PS3 also lost it's Dual HDMI output for 2 TV's... that also pisses me off since I was pretty set on that feature.

I'm not really sure that having an input to the system by moving the controler is really a great idea. I remember seeing a lot of people jerk the controler around during intense situations in games. Maybe controlers are big and heavy enough now that people don't do it as much, but I remember the controler going all over the place when my father was playing Nintendo games.
since your like one of the 50 people in this country with two HD televisions sitting right next to each other
Yeah, I gotta agree there.
Anyway, I'm just ticked off at Sony as a whole, but I shouldn't have expected anything from them given past performance. 7 USB ports? Multiple Ethernet connections? HDMI standard? No 2 SKU's?

I agree with CatYourAssToDevNull, I don't like the idea of input through controller motion. It interfears with gameplay more than it could possible help. Which is one of the reasons I don't like the Wii.
I must agree that dropping dual HDMI isn't much of a loss. Most people don't have a pair of HDMI enabled sets sitting next to each other. Besides, I don't like the idea of splitting a crosshair.
The more I look at these systems, while they are competing, they're not competing. Sony is fighting for Blu-Ray, Microsoft wants game console superiority, and Nintendo wants to sell boxes.
I personally intend to do as I have with all of my console purchases, wait until after the second holiday buying season.

I saw the 2 HDMI outputs more as something that could give Sony the FPS market... It already supports 7 controllers... imagine being able to play 7 people per box w/ 2 TV's
or sport games, or having additional cameras to see other angles.
