I'd like some input on what bands/artists people think have not sold out AND sell a ton of records. It seems to me that every time a band becomes mainstream popular, the tag that they have "sold out" is immediately applied. I'd like some examples of bands that have not sold out yet sell millions of records.

Anyone consider NIN a sellout? I wouldn't think so, but maybe I'm lacking in information.

NIN can't sell out. Just wouldn't work.

Some bands, in my opinion:

Marylin Manson
Slipknot
Disturbed
Linkin Park (though they feel as if they are a toss-up on that)
Korn
Breaking Benjamin (give them time and they'll reach that millions mark)

It's harder to think of bands that haven't, as compared to thinking of bands that has

Rage Against the Machine.
Selling out doesn't happen when you hate the government.
Also, Reel Big Fish.

311 was good for a while, but their last stuff hasnt quite been up to snuff. worries me a bit, all this new popularity after from chaos, they might start making stuff for the radio, rather than what they want to write

The only one I would somewhat agree to would be Linkin Park (but I just think that's because of that thing they did with Jay-Z). I need some reasons behind the rest

Slipknot- Mass produced metal, music isn't that great.
Disturbed- See above. Although The Sickness is a great albumn
Linkin Park- Their music is on the radio 24/7, their videos are ultra-high budget and always suck (with the exception of crawling, i love that video).
Korn- First 2 CD's were awesome, the rest were mass-produced metal
Breaking Benjamin- Typical radio crap, most songs sound alike, obvisoly corporate influenced.

I do like every band on that list, however i consider them sell outs for some degree. I consider just about any band that i hear ten times a day on Clear Channel radio that they are forced to play sell outs....or more broadly, when the music becomes about corporate profits and getting rich instead of making great music and a little bit of money.

Trent can't sell out because he produces on his own label (Nothing) and he always writes what he wants to at the time. He always produces work that is pertinent to his emotional and intellectual state at the time, which is why all of his albums sound so different. So good call Sczroer, he simply can't sell out.
And KMFDM is a German industrial band that has a sound that is a lot like NIN's "Pretty Hate Machine" (although KMFDM came before NIN).
MDFMK is the band that was formed when a member left KMFDM and they simply switched it around. KMFDM actually stands for something in German that roughly equates to "No Pity For the Majority."

I think Tool is a good example of not selling out, as they have gone through multiple lawsuits and holdouts to maintain their creative control.
I think Chevelle is a good example of selling out (check out their first album ["Point #1"] and then check out their latest two albums).
Deftones are kind of neutral in this issue, but I think they haven't sold out.
Dream Theater hasn't sold out (I don't know how, since any smart corporate douchebags wouldn't allow songs over 5 minutes, much less songs that range from 10-20 minutes).
I don't think Incubus sold out, I think Brandon Boyd just got full of himself.
Radiohead definitely hasn't sold out. It seems like they're more trying to alienate their mainstream audience. lol

Edit: Damn, phuck you beat me to Tool.
But honestly, Rage didn't sell out, de la Rocha just got a big head.

ben laden, weren't you the one earlier saying that all bands sell out? If not, sorry, got you mixed up with somebody else.

Slipknot definitely sold out though, listen to their earlier demos and mate.feed.kill.repeat. Sounds absolutely nothing like their other stuff.

I would say that NIN owes alot of credit to Big Black, moreso than KMFDM. The album "Songs About Fucking" was released in 1987 and I would venture to say its light years ahead of "Pretty Hate Machine." Its got a much more raw sound to it.

I was the one saying that earlier, but I was saying that mostly in a strictly technical sense of the phrase (and also just to be a dick, which I feel the need to do sometimes).

And I'm not trying to say who NIN deserves to give credit to; I simply am saying that Trent would literally have to make a big effort to do something like selling out. And actually, "Pretty Hate Machine" is my least favorite album by NIN, so I'm glad he got away from the Industrial sound.
