I don't understand the deal here, they approach a check point, they don't stop, the soldiers fire on the car. Can anyone explain this to me?

I completely agree. When told to stop by armed troops, you stop, or risk the consequences. I dont care if its a war zone or not. When all those precautions are taken (U.S. troops "attempted to warn the driver to stop by hand and arm signals, flashing white lights, and firing warning shots in front of the car,") and you still dont stop, well, you're gonna take a risk.

a) with a comment like that there can be no other reason than to provoke people and b) said op was run by the military, as are most ops. politicians only decide the large scale strategic picture. tactical ops are all planned and run by those in uniform. so your point is moot, regardless

It isn't the behavior of the front line troops that is suspect. They did what they thought was appropriate under the circumstances. However, there are some larger questions here. If she (the Italian journalist) was a hostage for months and was just freed after a well exectued military operation, why didn't she have an escort of a couple humvees on the way to the airport? Why didn't the troops know that she was coming? It seems that there were some failures of communication here. They may have been on the Italian side or the American side but someone somewhere should have told the soldiers that she was on her way to the airport and to look out for her. Up until the warning shots were fired, all the gestures that the soldiers meant to stop the car could have been misinterpreted as celebratory gestures.

What would you all be saying if the situation were reversed? What if Italian troops had fired on a recently freed American hostage because the car didn't stop?

In a place like Iraq, which has had a history of terrorists loading up vans and whatnot with explosives and ramming them into check points at high rates of speed, I believe the soldiers were justified when they opened fire. If you see a van approaching at a high rate of speed, you signal to stop multiple times in multiple ways, and they don't stop, you can only assume the worst. For christ's sake, the van didn't even stop when they fired warning shots. How fucking retarded were they?

It's the same type of thing as us bombing the Canadians in Afghanistan on accident when Canada failed to let us know they were doing training excercises in somewhat hostile territory. Yes, it is miscommunication that led to the problem, but if the same thing had happened to us then I would say, "Well, that sucks. Should have let them know we were going to be there." If the soldiers didn't know that they were supposed to let them through (which I doubt they were since I'm sure the hostage would have been safe to stop at a checkpoint) then they were just trying to do their job. If anything they need to find out who dropped the ball in relaying the message and get that person in trouble.
