I realize someone with experience needs to be in the position, but it seems like they would want to choose a slightly younger pope. I'm not so sure how long this one is going to last.

He should of kept his own last name.

Ratzinger. Can't get any better than that

Actually they tend to pick older men so that their reign isn't quite as long as John Paul II's was.

Anyway, Pope Benidict XVI (I think that's what he's going under) is going to be essentially the same as John Paul II was, only probably a little tougher on the child molestation front.

They are allowed to, but no pope had kept their name in something like 400 years. He's just continuing a tradition.

EDIT: Okay, so it's more like 1500 years.

rofl, excellent edit!

I too think ratzinger is a totally badassed name, too bad he couldn't keep it. I also think the pope should be younger, more like 65, then he can have a decent reign, while having lots of experience in the church.

well, usually after a long reigning pope they elect someone older, but either way, he could easily have a good 10 years.

Viva il Papa!!!!

He looks like the antichrist, which, considering the fact he's the pope, is quite ironic

So, apparently the new pope was in the Hitler Youth in the '40s. Not to say he's a nazi or anything - it was probably forced up on him. Still, interesting to note though.
