Yep thats right as of before 1:00 there is a fire at the chancellors house, dont know how big, but there is a fire.

And he hasn't even moved in yet.

I was around as the trucks were pulling up. There was smoke coming out of the very top of the roof, even through the shingles in places it looked like. Stayed for about 10 minutes, and there wasn't a whole lot more action so I left.

So is it going to cost another 750 grand to fix the fire damage

Monday they'll announce a $500 fee for every student to fix the place up;P

but really, it could easily cost 500k to fix, devide that by 5,000 students = $100 per student to pay for what was probably some idiots mistake.

Hopefully the university or the contractor is insured...

Don't worry about the money. They'll just push off repairing the MRC Heating/Air conditioning system again. That's where the got the money for this damn renovation as it is. And like it needed it, the freaking thing was renovated like 5 yrs ago!

Calm down, folks. It was an attic fire. I'm not quite sure what was burning, but there was a lot of light-tan smoke at the start coming out of any conceivable roof orifice. No flames were visible, and the smoke didn't have any distinct smell to it, either. At 12:50pm, the fire trucks pulled up (the smoke was already dying down at this point), and by 1:35 the fire fighters were done, sitting around outside drinking water. I have no idea what kind of damage was sustained or whether it was structural or not, but I'm pretty sure it was all confined to the attic. Nothing too serious.

FIRE AT UMR CHANCELLOR’S RESIDENCE



A small fire in the attic spread smoke through parts of the Chancellor’s Residence at the University of Missouri-Rolla this afternoon (Friday, Sept. 9). The building was immediately evacuated, and no one was hurt.



According to Rolla Fire and Rescue, the fire appears to have started while a contracting crew was soldering copper guttering on the roof. Solder may have dripped behind the elevator shaft in the attic, causing smoldering.



Firefighters cut a hole in the roof to help air the structure out and cool the attic.



The fire caused extensive damage to the building’s southwest turret, smoke damage on the second and third floors, and minor damage to the elevator shaft.



Rolla Fire and Rescue were called to the scene at 12:47 p.m. The Rolla Police Department and University Police assisted.



Designed initially to be the first dormitory for campus -- then known as the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, or MSM -- the residence is undergoing its first major renovation in nearly 20 years. The fire damage is expected to delay the renovations, but university officials have yet to determine the time frame.



Dr. John F. Carney III, who became UMR chancellor on Sept. 1, and his wife, Pat, are living off-campus in a rented residence during the renovation.
