Other countries want control of "the internet" (really DNS). Soon, our politicians will be fighting for this and they don't know anything about it! Hooray!

Manage the internet? Dude, wtf, last I heard content posted on the net was protected under the First Admendment of free speech. They can't get rid of our pr0n that easily.
And if they try to edit shit out (like how to make meth or bombs or whatever) and make stuff like that illegal, yer going to have -more- people doing it, just to give the finger to those parently figures who are saying "Do it...do it and I'll fucking spank you."

All content posted to the net is protected under free speech of course, we need to spread democracy to the world. Since we own the Internet, of course our liberty applies to the Internet!

No, the rest of the world is pissed that most of the decisions about domain names and IP address assignments happen in America, and that there's not much support for domain names that don't use the Latin alphabet.
I just read a story on The Register that Brazil is strongly backing this because their economy is so reliant on the Internet now.
My opinion is if they trusted the US so much to develop their economy around the Internet that they should continue to trust us not to screw up their stuff.

No... no they can't, because we have control of the management of the internet right now. The only domains that can be used are the ones that we say.[/quote]
we have a college network, a network of the area, then we also have a network of all missouri universities. you can make a network with out being on the internet and therefore can control it. china has enough technological centers that they could create their own internet solely consisted of chinese computers and servers.

Where does it say that everything posted on the net is free speech?

Chankster, the idea is you can't be persecuted from what you say on the internet to a degree like you cannot be by saying anything here, but what people aren't understanding is regardless, that would stay intact, because countries can't impose rules unto us. the issue isn't about content on the internet guys. its about technical things as well as domain issues, I could understand why japan and china wouldn't be very happy about it.
further does anyone know how it is we have control of the internet? i'd really like to know how it came about, cern claims to have invented it, but i've heard other suggestions saying the military here did, but nothing concrete as to how it came about or why we have domination of it.
To give you an idea about the laws that apply to the internet, china has some of the best emulation/dvd rip piracy sites out there, something we've been pissed off about for a long time, but can do nothing about. political rules like that don't apply.
doesnt the article say something about the internet being a pentagon project and funded by the U.S. i dont know but sounds like a good reason as to why we have control of it now.
