haven't read that article yet

Apparently 'hackers' are trying to use this rootkit stuff to make undetectable cheats for games too. Read somewhere that its popped up in WoW already. Something about the cheats can't be detected because they are actually a hidden system file or some mumbo jumbo....sure someone here can explain.

Corporations are all the same if you haven't noticed. Much like how now most political parties are very same-y.

that's some-what old news (if you consider a week or so old), here's some more information on the rootkit in general:

A timeline of events since the rootkit deal was discovered, with links to articles

Some interesting tidbits:
-Sony has released a remover for the DRM, but in fact it adds other stuff and leaves huge gaping security holes, exploitable by a simple url link.
-Mac users are affected too, Sony has provided another piece of DRM software just for them.
-Sony has recently patented a DRM scheme for the PS3 that ties games to the specific console they were first used on, which would completly eliminate the ability to trade, borrow, or buy used games. Don't know if this will actually be in the PS3 though.
-Apparently Sony has no qualms about ripping off others IP. There is strong evidence that they included free open source software (the LAME encoder), but made no effort for attribution, as required in the license.

I for one, think people should boycott Sony music until a public apology is made and affected cd's are recalled.

Also, interesting stuff from their EULA on cds. From an amazon review:

Quote:
1. If your house gets burgled, you have to delete all your music from your laptop when you get home. That's because the EULA says that your rights to any copies terminate as soon as you no longer possess the original CD.

2. You can't keep your music on any computers at work. The EULA only gives you the right to put copies on a "personal home computer system owned by you."

3. If you move out of the country, you have to delete all your music. The EULA specifically forbids "export" outside the country where you reside.

4. You must install any and all updates, or else lose the music on your computer. The EULA immediately terminates if you fail to install any update. No more holding out on those hobble-ware downgrades masquerading as updates.

5. Sony-BMG can install and use backdoors in the copy protection software or media player to "enforce their rights" against you, at any time, without notice. And Sony-BMG disclaims any liability if this "self help" crashes your computer, exposes you to security risks, or any other harm.

6. The EULA says Sony-BMG will never be liable to you for more than $5.00. That's right, no matter what happens, you can't even get back what you paid for the CD.

7. If you file for bankruptcy, you have to delete all the music on your computer. Seriously.

8. You have no right to transfer the music on your computer, even along with the original CD.

9. Forget about using the music as a soundtrack for your latest family photo slideshow, or mash-ups, or sampling. The EULA forbids changing, altering, or make derivative works from the music on your computer.

Seriously, this group behind the cd on amazon must be pissed at Sony, there's no way that DRM can't be hurting their bottom line. Their CD has a 1.5 star rating, and vast majority of those users are writing about how pissed they are about the sony DRM.

Sony is recalling the CD's with this program embedded in it.
