UMR crime alert: armed robbery on campus

An armed robbery occurred on campus Monday night in the parking lot behind the UMR Campus Support Facility, the UMR Police Department reports.

According to the UMR PD's crime alert, the victim was leaving CSF after delivering pizza when he was approached by a clean-shaven black male who was wearing dark clothes and a blue bandanna on his head. “The suspect had what appeared to be a small handgun with a silver barrel,” according to the UMR PD crime alert. The suspect put the gun into the victim’s ribs, told the victim to give him the money, and took all the money the victim was carrying.

The suspect then got into a red two-door Neon, which was occupied by two white males. “A white male in the rear seat was wearing a blue jacket, and a white male in the front seat had dark-colored hair.” The vehicle headed south on U.S. Highway 63 toward 10th Street, but the victim did not see where they went from there.

UMR Police Chief Bill Bleckman urges members of the campus community to continue taking precautions for their safety and protection. Anyone having information about this incident is encouraged to call UMR Police at 341-4300.

Yes, very sacry.

I guess since most students are poor or broke, the pizza guy was the only logical choice to rob, eh?

I'm extremely surprised this thread hasn't turned into a pro-concealed carry diatribe.

Yeah, that's right Naked Prophet, I'm looking at you! lol
Just kidding, I could care less.

Saw it posted up by the elevators on my floor. Something about some black guy (same description) who tried to rob the bank by TJ, but didn't get anything and then four hours later tried to rob some gas station over by Wal-Mart. The thing with the silver handgun is the same in all three stories.

I know you were joking, but if the pizza guy had a concealed weapon, he might have been able to stop the armed robber. (It was probably an Airsoft painted black/silver.) But then he would have gotten fired for having a gun at work. Then he would have sued the pizza company for wrongful termination. Then there would be a big battle in the Supreme Court over concealed carry at work. And if the robber got shot, OH SHIT!, he would sue the pizza guy for shooting him and the ACLU would start bitching about the "rights" of the robber. Then the poor pizza guy would have to pay out the ass for the out-of-court settlement, and then file for bankruptcy because he couldn't afford it. The robber would be singing all the way to the bank, which he promptly robbed at gunpoint.

I would just like to point out that campus is one of the few places that does not allow concealed carry. The criminal has chosen a safe working environment.

Second, I would like to point out that when you're robbed by an armed robber, your life depends on the goodwill of someone who by definition (armed robber) would be willing to kill you for the $20 in your wallet. I would much rather trust my life to my own gun than to a criminal's itchy trigger finger.

That said, if I am injured in an armed robbery on campus, I will sue everyone on campus who could have made the decision to allow concealed carry. If I am killed in an armed robbery on campus, my family will not rest until everyone who could have made that decision is jobless, homeless, and hopeless, and students are allowed to protect themselves.

Now, for some practical tips on self-defense without a gun.

1. avoid bad places/times. Leave campus while it's still light out. I often continue to run tests until late, but I'm going to shut down my equipment and leave the lab much earlier from now on.

2. keep your eyes open. The robber had to approach the pizza man. If the pizza man had seen him coming and become suspicious, he may have been able to drop his pizza and run back to his car and leave. Or maybe he could have done something else, I don't know.

3. get training. A gun against your ribs is dangerous, of course, but there are things you can do. Find a police instructor, or a firearms instructor, and ask about taking a class in self-defense for places you can't carry a gun. You can learn how to take someone's gun, throw off their aim, etc. (of note here - criminals don't take these classes. Using a gun against a criminal is unlikely to get your gun taken away, not to mention that concealed carry classes teach how to avoid a gun grab anyway).

4. carry something that IS okay to carry on campus. You can carry a high quality folding knife. Pocketknives are okay on campus - or at least so common that you can't possibly get in trouble for it (assuming you don't attack someone, of course). You can carry quality OC (pepper) spray. If you're going to carry it, practice with it and take a class for it. Buy two or three cans of OC and use two to practice aiming and get used to the burning effects of overspray or mist.

5. fight back, hard. Sometimes you can't avoid being in a bad place at a bad time (pizza driver). Sometimes you see it coming but can't avoid it. Criminals expect you to do what they say - after all, that's what the police tell you to do (why do the police assist the criminals? Never figured that one out...). Most of the time, a criminal will run away if you resist. Remember, you don't know if he just wants your wallet or if he wants to kidnap you so his gang can have an evening of entertainment. You may be fighting for your life. Again - get training, get a weapon (car keys suck as a weapon), and get in the mindset that your life is worth protecting, and you as a good person are worth more than this piece of shit that is attacking you.

6. get politically active. Try and get your rights back - if enough students demand their right to carry a gun, UMR will have to capitulate. In time they will notice that mass shootings haven't happened any of the other places where concealed carry is allowed, that permit holders haven't had any gun accidents in any of the other places where concealed carry is allowed, and permit holders haven't committed any crimes in any of the other places where concealed carry is allowed... so maybe those things won't happen on campus either. You don't have to carry a gun to be protected by concealed carry - that armed robber doesn't know whether you're going to shoot back or not. Maybe he'll get a ride to Illinois or Kansas, where he knows nobody will shoot back.

Oh yeah, the pizza guy having a gun would have been great. If the attacker indeed had a loaded gun in his possession when he robbed the guy, and the pizza guy starts reaching for something, what do you think the robber would have done? Would he have paused and said, "I challenge thee to a duel, 20 paces, turn and fire." No, he would have shot the sorry bastard, still robbed him and probably taken his gun. Hmm, 50 bux or a gsw, that's a tough choice.
