This is NOT an attack on any specific fraternity with a chapter at UMR. It IS an attack on hazing in general. This is why parents are cautious of allowing the n00bs to become plebes. Why do dormies hate Greeks? Partially because of incidents of hazing.
Hazing is not "funny," nor is it "tradition." It is cruel and needs to stop everywhere. As far too many Greeks find out, the consequences of hazing far out-weigh the so-called "value" of it. I am proud to say that I was never placed in a situation that could be construed as hazing. At least in my opinion, I was never hazed.
i started out at a campas w. a huge hazing problem. i saw a sorority (which will not be named) lose its charter and have many secrets revealed in the process.
Basically a girl was drinking (in the house which is against all panhel. rules) and surcomed to alcohol poisoning. almost died.
they were on prohibation but lost that too. eventually another sorority came in and took their place and some of the old girls joined that one but it was still a mess.
but they had this cage downstairs they would lock pledges in until they learned their greek ABC's.
i am the proud alum of a sorority that never did any hazing in my 2 years there. you didnt even mention the word hazing because the greek community is so afraid of it now.

lol
Oh yeah, nice article. But look at all the comments and what they're saying. Christ, people make me sick.
Bounty Hunter, are you in a frat? If so, which one?

The word "bi-partisan" usually means some larger-than-usual deception is being carried out.
So I assume your house has a policy against hazing and that they actually stick to it based on your original post?

Yes, we do have a strict anti-hazing policy and do our best to stick to it.

HAZING
No chapter, colony, student or alumnus shall conduct nor condone hazing activities. Hazing activities are those defined as:
"Any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Such activities may include but are not limited to the following: use of alcohol; paddling in any form; creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks; quests, treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, road trips or any such activities carried on outside or inside the confines of the chapter house; wearing of public apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and buffoonery; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with academic achievement, fraternal law, ritual or policy or the regulations and policies of the educational institution, or applicable state law."
SEXUAL ABUSE
The fraternity will not tolerate or condone any form of sexually abusive behavior on the part of its members, whether physical, mental or emotional. This is to include any actions which are demeaning to women and men, including but not limited to, date rape, gang rape or verbal harassment.
Our International also maintains a hazing Hotline. All claims will be investigated.

Our house believes that the person we are pledging will eventually become a brother and close friend to us. It makes no sense to build any resentment by making pledges do unnecessary or embarrassing actions. Hence, we have a strict no hazing policy. Most of the active members of our house remember their freshman year to be the best. To them, having to go through everything the first time with a group of their pledge brothers proved the most exciting and fun time.
Our pledges do have duties to complete (like cleaning a bathroom, doing dishes, etc.) but so does everyone else in house. These pledges will become part of our family and we don't want to spoil that relationship through unneccessary abuse.
When stuff like this happens, it ruins the reputation of the entire Greek community.
I know some fraternities up at Mizzou that are kinda like that. If i was in a fraternity that tolerated that bullshit i was quit right away. Its just people trying to be cool and live up to the whole animal house image, and stupid ignorant fucks who dont know what being in a fraternity is all about.
Being in a fraternity isn't about drinking and partying. Those things are fun, but that isn't everything. I had a 1.5 GPA my first semester here. I couldn't handle the difficulty of UMR and the added stress of joining a Fraternity. Not to mention partying and the first real taste of independence from my parents. But because the house cared about me as my Second Family, they forced me into the House's study program for my second semester. I was to sit in the "study area" (Bar on weekends) from 6pm until 11pm with a half hour break at 9pm. I was required to do my homework/ read ahead/ work on projects/etc. I got a 2.9 GPA my second semester because of this program. If it was not in place, I would have failed out of UMR. If I were in the dorms, I would not have lasted here. I still lost my scholarship but I learned how to study better.
I am not at UMR currently because of money, not grades. I am planning on returning to UMR in the fall after saving up some money and getting loans. I have been going to the local community college while working here at home in KC. I will go back to the house without reservation. I am eternally grateful for everything they have done for me. I truly love them like brothers. When I would come home on weekends, I felt like an outsider. My "home" was at the house.

mizzou is horrible about hazing. its like they're begging for their charters to be removed.
panhel and ifc take hazing very seriously. even accusing someone of hazing is risky buisness. they can get kicked out and fined (if its an individual) or the entire chapter can be removed (if its an entire house).
over the years there been so many problems with hazing that i dont blame ifc or panhel for such strict rules. theres even a few cases of deaths due to hazing. granted these are very...make that extremely... rare, they still shouldnt have happened in the 1st place. one death is still too many.
hazing really angers me. greek life is about botherhood/sisterhood and making friends and connections that will prepare you for the rest of your life. its not about who can stick their thumb up another pledge's ass or who can not sleep or eat for several days straight.
(i apologize for some typos made in this post. my keyboard is on the fritz lately. i think i got most of them though)

Wow that is fucked up. I would have never joined a frat if I had to do that shit, not even worth it.
ALICE anyone?
ALICE was different. There were no secrets about it, and it was not restricted to pleges only. You simply had to be hated that much by those in your community to be thrown in a pit of ...stuff.
And unless I'm mistaken, that's why they got rid of it.

“Look, this isn’t what I would qualify as Guantanamo Bay-type torture. These aren’t CIA interrogation tactics, but clearly at least what I consider pretty offensive, over-the-top hazing,” said Charles Schimmel, an attorney who is representing the four men in a lawsuit filed in Douglas County District Court. “All of these guys feel very betrayed and very upset.”
That's actually quite funny, because rolling in urine and feces is actually pretty similar to the stuff the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay went through. Other than beatings (which are illegal and should get a soldier a court marshal), all those prisoners had to endure was discomfort (nudity, heat, cold, prolonged periods of standing or kneeling, sleep deprivation). The major difference between the hazed and the tortured is that the hazed guys were probably wicked drunk while the stuff was going on.
Actually, if you want to see some real hazing, check out this article -- complete with video and photographic evidence. Apparently some parts of the British armed forces like to subject their recruits to some pretty awful stuff by forcing them to fight naked, attaching live electrodes to their genitals (not fake ones like in Abu Ghraib), and beating them unconscious. Oh and everyone was drunk, of course.
For the record, I'm against hazing and torture, but I find the similarity between hazing and the "torture" in the news recently pretty interesting, especially considering the quote above.
On an interesting cultural side note, according to the article I linked, Stella Artois beer (not a bad lager, by the way) is called wifebeater to the limeys.
