Textpad is not actually a java compiler, it only sends your files to the native java compiler, which it should do automatically if you installed the JDK. Using Textpad's compile command is no different than just typing "javac Filename.java" from the command line.

What exactly do you dislike about TextPad? I'm rather fond of it, and use a similar program (jEdit) to do all my PHP/C++ work. I am unfamiliar with Java, however, I was introduced to TextPad by a Java, SQL, and PL/SQL guru (who used it extensively).

Maybe the fact that it costs money for a mediocre text editor, has crashed on me, and I see no reasons why it is considered good. Maybe it is just because windows users are not used to having good text editors.
