I got an email today about applying for student Council President. This is a position that i have no desire to occupy, but it got me thinking...

WHAT HAS STUDENT COUNCIL BEEN DOING ALL YEAR?!

It isn't that they don't post their accomplishments, whatever they may be, but it is that they are not posted in a readily accessable area. In my opinion, student council should submit their minutes to the Missouri Miner. At least then, I don't have to search for the student council web site (BTW, UMR's web site search engine sucks). The last thing I remember hearing about student council is how at the last election there were actually more than 1 applicant running for prez.

I know someone who controls the minutes, or knows who controls the minutes reads this forum, and I would like my recommendation taken into consideration.

If there are other means of getting these minutes... wait, you know what? forget the minutes. All that political jargon mixed up in there makes it difficult to distil what I want out of them anyway. Just put the accomplishments of each meeting in a flyer or something and post them around campus, or in the Missouri Miner. I would like to know that our StuCo is actually doing something, or even if they are.

Not really the minutes, that would be boring. How about a formatted summary of what was accomplished? It could also be sent on the student e-connection.

Dude... layoff... they looked into something several years ago. That tides them over until 2085.

On the left hand side are links to the minutes

The SIT committee is setting up a new server for the StuCo website and I also believe updating the site so, I don't exactly know what changes will be present on the new site but.. I do think there will be some.

If they're anything like the student council at my high school, they never have, and never will do anything useful.

Exactly, it is not the best article to read, and I can't tell what is done and what isn't.

All I am asking for is a simple list of accomplishments by StuCo after every meeting, preferrably posted in the Missouri Miner, or about campus, or even in the Student eConnection (as was mentioned earlier). I don't know about parlimentary procedure, I looked into it once, and I couldn't be past the bureaucratic BS. Therefore, I don't like the minutes.

well.. except for the fact that we are the governing body, along with SAFB that determines, how the student activity fee's are distributed..

According to what I hear about StuCo, they either don't know shit about Parlamentry Procedure, or they don't give a shit... unless it helps them get their way.

Their most important purpose(in my opinion) is to divy up funding to various organizations. They work with the SAFB board (also made up of students) to fairly divide up student fees to pay for things such as Solar Car, Formula Car, Varsity sports, Clubs, Events, etc.

They also do some other things(address student complaints, attempt to influence university policy, etc.). All in all, Stuco does alot of the behind the scenes work. Kind of like the house of representatives in our nation. Its not too high-profile, but things do get done and they have alot of influence.

Edit: As a former Stuco member, Parlamentary Procedure is annoying.

I went to a stuco meeting for the first time last night. They say they follow Robert's Rules, but its really a half hearted attempt. People were regularly addressing the floor out of turn, including the officers (I'm not complaining, just stating what I saw).

As a side note, it would be cool if Stuco got in on the clicker frenzy that seems to be going around campus. Each voter could use a clicker to submit thier votes.

I like the idea of the minutes being published in the miner. I think they should make the weekly Chartwells rant into a biweekly rant and in the off weeks it they could publish the stuco minutes.

So far SAFB has been brought up twice. Which is a good point. StuCo does do that, and does it farily well, in my opinion. Problem: SAFB meetings are done by September. So that leaves Oct. through May in which what is occuring?

The only reason I have said anything is because I personally have no idea what is going on in StuCo. It bothers me. I feel like an uninformed voter.

Anyway, because most of the stuff they do is behind the scenes, they should publish what they do (sorry, but your web site is just not cutting it) so that the student body knows that they are not just a bunch of people torturing themselves by trying to obey Robert's Rules.

My recommendations have been made with their best interest in mind, as well as my own curiosity.

It's far worse torture trying to run (and attending) a meeting of that size WITHOUT RR.

It would probably proceed far better if they would properly adhere to them.

Stuco frequently submits articles to the Miner. They are in the Student Life section nearly every other week. Yesterday was the first meeting of the semester so I bet you will see something I the Miner in the next week or two.

Minutes are boring and would take up a lot of room in the paper. The real purpose of them is to be a reference in case there is a question or disagreement about what happened in a previous meeting. They are all available on the stucco website.

I would agree with the previous posters that one of Stuco main responsibilities is to oversee the money that is distributed to other campus organizations and to provide student into to administrators. This isn’t much fun to read about, but goes a long to help other organization and the campus do what they want/need to do.
