Read this quote on another website, thought it fits.
Quote:
You can get drunk and run your car off a bridge and leave a young lady to drown, but heaven help you if you accidently wound a friend with birdshot while bird hunting. Maybe if Cheney had run off and left his friend to die, the media and liberals would be easier on him.

That happened what, 30+ years ago? I personally dislike both Dick Cheney and Ted Kennedy. I think this is nothing more than a smiple hunting accident (which are always caused by negligence on someone's part) and it is stupid that it is being turned political...

I agree. Cheney was negligent because he was not aware of the location of all members of his hunting party.
But, he didn't kill anybody, he didn't leave them to die, he didn't lie about it, and the media is not defending those actions for him. That is the difference.

He did, however, stall news reports of it, which I think is fairly dishonest. But yeah, I'm no Cheney fan by any means, but this has become much more political than it should be. It was a pretty careless thing to do, but it's hardly political.

Since when is it the responsibility of someone to report an accident to the news? The news is supposed to find stories, if he didn't lie or "lean" on reporters to keep it from leaking, then I see no problem. My brother shot me in the face with a BB gun when we were young, we didn't call a press conference and make sure the world knew about it. A guy from my hometown got shot in the back while turkey hunting a few years back, no press conference, so why should Cheney go out of his way to do it immediately?

Explain how this random situation that happened 30 years ago is relevent in any way.

I'd say a situation when you should tell the media is when you are the vice-president of the country and there is the possiblity that you could be criminally charged with manslaughter and removed from office. I would say that is a rather significant piece of information that should be given out.

As unfortunate as that is, that is irrelevent because the general public does not give a fuck about what happens with the personal situation you mentioned. Its pretty amazing that you dont make that connection. The fact that Cheney waited raises the suspicions that he was hiding the fact that he could have had alcohol in his system and wanted to get it out before he could be tested. In turn, that would raise the degree of seriousness that he could be charged with.

If Cheney had been charged with man slaughter, the public would have known. He (gunshot victim) was taken to the hospital, the hospital has to report all gunshot wounds to the cops, the cops are the ones who would have determined fault, performed blood/alcohol tests whatever, where would the press fit into that? Have you ever heard of a public record? He wasn't charged with anything, so the public is not privy to what happens in his private life, I am pretty amazed you cannot make that connection.

It's a big deal because the media doesn't care that Ted Kennedy left a woman to drown after he was driving drunk, and after he didn't report it to the police.
It's a big deal because the media is jumping all over this - a common, minor hunting accident - when they consistently defend the hero of Chappaquiddick.

I would feel better about the hunting situation if Cheney hadn't gone to dinner immediately afterwards with the rest of his party, then stalled for about 24 hours before discussing it with police, then joking about it, then leaving for washington and having aides call the guy to ask if he needed anything, then refused to comment on the situation, etc. etc.
Basically hunting accidents happen. Generally though, the people doing the shooting apologize and show some remorse. As always, it is not what the politicians do, but how they try to smooth it over, that gets them in trouble. I'd just like to hear that he said "I'm sorry" at some point.

Once again, that happened in 1969, well before any of us were born. Most of our parents were proably in grade/middle/high school at the time. How is that relevant at all in this situation?
Additionally, why would the media care? Why would the media report news that happened 37 years ago. What good would that do? Cheney shot a man in the face on Sunday. Accident, yes. Much less worse than what Ted Kennedy did, yes. But saying the meida dosen't care about the Ted Kennedy thing is just ridicuouls. Of course they don't care, it is old news! The Cheney thing is new news, and is relevant.

Why would he show remorse when he's a fucking robot?
