are you running a personal firewall (norton, mcaffee, ZoneAlarm, Windows, etc.,)?

Use these settings:

Incoming: minermail.umr.edu, requires SSL / Port 25
Outgoing (smtp): smtp.umr.edu, requires SSL / Port 993
Username / Password: your UMR userid / password

http://campus.umr.edu/it/security/Secur ... ml#express

1.) Disable any unnecessary firewalls
2.) Try thunderbird, to see if OE is at fault (http://www.mozilla.org)
3.) Establish a vpn connection (vpn.umr.edu -- see if that helps)
4.) Bring your computer to the IT Walk-In Center -- that'll probably fix it

ok, now i have to hijack. I have Tbird set up, worked great for a couple days, rebooted my computer, now i can receive but not send email. I have gone through IT's step-by-step setup thrice now, tried changing to SSL and optional TLS, neither works. No one at my house has any idea, wondering if any of you had any suggestions before I break down and call IT.

Here's the settings I use that work for me on campus.

Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings
Description: UMR SMTP
Server Name: minermail.umr.edu
Port: 25
Security and Authentication
[X] Use name and password
User Name: joeminer@umr.edu
Use secure connection:
[ ] No [X] TLS, if available [ ] TLS [ ] SSL

I tried those exact setting and still got an error:

Sending of message failed.

The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server minermail.umr.edu (or smtp.umr.edu, as I tried earlier) failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or else contact you network administrator.
