I think umr now has an automatic lockout system. If you plug in a router w/dhcp, they turn off your port, almost instantly. The joy here is that they send you an email informing you of it.

No, it's not automatic. Security still has to do it manually.

How many security staff do they keep online at one time? My roomate plugged in his router and the port shut down almost instantly.

I work at the helpdesk and we get calls all the time from people who are getting 192.168 IPs from someone's router. If someone calls in and reports it, and does arp -a to get the MAC address, if it's during business hours, we can call or e-mail someone from security and they get to it pretty quickly. Maybe there is an automated process, dunno.....

I did a arp -a and found that no one has a router issuing ip's to the network. The help desk emailed me back and told be i had a netbios problem. I think this is complete bull shit because it happened to many computers on my floor at once. If anyone has any other ideas or especially if you live on 5-8 you impute would be greatly appreciated.

have you tried resolving IPs manually?

Start>run>cmd>ping <smbname>
Start>run>\\<ip from previous command>

I for one see everything just fine for 131.151.185.* upstairs

Determine their IP address as RsaXVC said, or use their full registered hostname like r0xuserid.desktop.umr.edu. I know when I lived on 7 south, we all joined the same workgroup so we wouldn't have these problems.
