What's the prevailing opinion?

AFS has a buggy, problematic, memory hogging windows client, but awesome Linux support (and all the benefits of a cheap Unix type filesystem).
DFS, on the other hand, all but broke gpunix and all the Linux machines on campus. Sharity works *most* of the time, but a few useful things you could do at the Linux command prompt (symlinks, setting permissions, etc.) seemed to have been lost in the translation. Does anyone else cross their fingers when you have an assignment due the next day, and you have to log in to the gpunix servers? Otherwise, 500mb, cool..
Now a lot of people on campus probably care less about Linux, and these people are most likely enjoying that extra space on their S: drives. But, for everyone who needs to program in a stable Linux environment, the existing system doesn't seem to be the best solution.
Overall, I wish we could have a mix of DFS and some stable, native Linux networked file system. Why not have the Windows machines get their files hot and fresh from the DFS servers, and have a seperate volume (or series of volumes) for the *nix servers? Hell, we don't even need a lot of space to get started.. the old 100mb would be great to start working with. And it almost makes sense to have the appropriate file system for the application you want to use?
I just don't know how comfortable I feel putting the word "Technical" anywhere in the name of the University given the current state of things. All I know is I'm glad I'm graduating, and I'm glad that I got to enjoy gpunix back in the rocket.cc.umr.edu and saucer.cc.umr.edu days.

When I heard about the shift to DFS, I originally though DCE/DFS, which is even better for linux than afs. But they went to MS DooFuS.
AFS:
The AFS we're used to has had how many years to get stable?
AFS caches things. Anyone notice how long it takes to compile hello world on vs.net 2003 on DFS?
DFS:
Logon without connectivity (caches credentials)
(More) universal logon-no more must you apply for a sun unix machine account and that jimmer-jammin

Did anyone have a program like WinSCP go totally apeshit before DFS? I never used to have any trouble with file transfers, but now I always get bitched at about permissions not being able to be set correctly.
heck with this dfs junk I have to log back in every time I change folders

I really don't know much about Linux/Unix/etc but it is nice to actually have room for large autocad projects on my s drive now. Before I had to go through all sorts of maneuverings to make sure nothing was lost or I was shut down do to hitting my afs limit.

It is my understanding that part of the problem with just upping quotas is that the old AFS system didn't take the change in volume size well. It much preferred staticly sized, small volumes. But I don't remember where I herd it.

I have reason to believe that DFS is causing the computers in EE to run terribly slow. Are the other computers around campus running slower since they "upgraded" to DFS?

That is what I believe. It is probably shitty windows programming causing the whole interface to hang while its waiting for a response from the network. It's like browsing network shares with windows, only worse.

Yeah, DFS is basically being a huge pain in the ass lately and causing these problems. The computers that are new DFS builds should be fine, but the ones converted from AFS to DFS are the ones having problems for one reason.
BTW, to whoever's been submitting tickets saying the computers suck or calling DFS "poopy", keep it up and you're sure to get IT to consider changing anything
