You can't just take yours out and put another one in. Various security measures against it.

you need to mod the xbox, or prepare it with a linux boot disk.

I was under the impression that you can't even simply replace an xbox hd with another xbox hd. I thought it still needed to be modded.

No, it needs to be locked to the motherboard in question. So you can mod it and then remove the mod very easily.

If you want a new Xbox HD I have several. You can have it for free. You can have a Seagate or WD your choice.

But if you want to fix it your kind of screwed in a way. You have to get your box to boot a unlocked HD or from the DVD tray. Meaning modchip. You can't softmod a Xbox with a broken HD. Just not possible, the stock bios won't allow it to boot past the error screen.

You need someone with a removeable modchip. Lock a stock HD to your Xbox and then remove the modchip. Problem solved.

As long as you don't have a relatively new xbox, I should have no trouble fixing you up...

I'll need a hard drive though...

If you're wanting to get on Live, and you've already been on with your old drive, things might be tricky if not impossible if I remember correctly...

You can take a standard hard drive, livecd up some linux on your pc, dd over an image(can be found in various places) hash your xbox serial number, lock it with the hash, and plug it in
