I especially like where they talk about limited funds, how much could a class like this cost? Surely you could get several for oh say $100k... which as we all know is virtually free.
I kind of feel bad for Wasinger though, he is being bashed for having common sense and saying that those funds would be better spent on existing underfunded classes/labs then starting retarded courses that

Yeah, that is a valuable class....

Maybe it will be a valuable class at a campus such as this.

The word "bi-partisan" usually means some larger-than-usual deception is being carried out.
finally, a situation where i can safely say "this is so gay" and have it really be two meanings. honestly, does this university need a queer specific class? bring it up in philosophy, but this is just a waste of money that could be appropriated to much better things. and don't give me the "this campus is intolerant" bs. its not the University's job to influence people's positions.

The basic point of the resolution didn't really have anything to do with Queer Theory classes. And the one passed by Student Council here doesn't even mention Queer Theory. See here for the text of what was passed, which in no way mentions Queer Theory, but it does say that the UM system should support diversity classes, and not discontinue or not support classes that meet the mission of the UM System.
Additionally, Ms McCoy is either misquoted or just wrong in the article, because the resolution did not pass by acclamation, and there were at least 61 voting members present at that meeting, because thats how many were needed for quorum that night.
Now with that said, my thoughts. It was incredibly stupid for that curator to make what was percieved as a homophobic comment to a public source. He should have known that he was going to get shit for it from someone who was offended too easily.
As for the whole Queer theory classes thing, to me its nothing more than a class on African-American studies or Asian-American studies repackaged for a different minority. If there is support for the class at UMSL, let them offer it there. If there is support for it here (from both students and faculty), let them offer it here. I'm still not going to give two shits about it, just like I don't give two shits about any of the other diversity classes offered here.

meh . . . i'm with amd2800barton on this one, the fact that so many people are worried about this is gay. it seems that if this class were offered it would just be a meeting for the Davici Society three times a week. After that semester it wouldn't be offered again because there would be no one esle interested in taking it.

But those are different. We might take those classes. The history of african descendants or asian descendants in the United States is actually pretty interesting, and there's a lot you don't hear about in high school. "Queer theory" though? I don't need a class to tell me how to accept people whose ancestors were born in asia or africa - if someone DID need that class, they would be unlikely to take it.
I don't have a problem with the class, it just doesn't seem to meet the goals they set forth as the reasons for it. They should just be honest and say they're trying to be more PC or placate the gay lobby.

In the interests of diversity are they going to start offering a class in White, Protestant, Male Studies? True diversity includes everyone.
you mean American History?
