Ok, res life sucks. I want to move out ASAP. I'm not here to debate why it does or doesn't suck or why its better or worse to live in a dorm. I'm an adult and I can make my own choice.
I want to know what will happen if I just pack my shit up at semester and leave the res halls. I plan to get an apartment and keep going to school here full time. I don't have 50 hours at UMR yet, I'm not married, I'm not 21, my parents don't live close and I don't have children. What will happen if I just pack up my shit and refuse to come back to the res halls?
Has anyone gotten out of the Res Halls and been in the same boat as me?
Does anybody know what I might do to get out of the Res Halls?

It just depends. They will say whatever they will, but when it comes down to it, they would rather take your money for tuition than have you leave.
Personally, they specifically told me that I had to enroll in the res-halls, however, I just didn't. I paid for tuition and just got a house. MUCH NICER My roomate is a sophomore, and he did the same thing, he just left. They didnt make him pay for the res hall either.
You could always just find a townie-friend and get their parents to sign a paper saying you are planning to stay with them. That would take care of it I think. There is no reason to stay in the dorms if you have a close "family friend" who you are going to supposedly stay with for free. That would be outrageous otherwise.
so, next year what if i just decide im not going to sign up for res life... i may actually not have to because i have quasi-46 hours at the end of the semester (ap exams, although it appears i don't get credit for them, just credit waived)
can i (hypothetically) just not sign up for a dorm not pay for food from here and find my own means of staying alive?

With them making you pay the rest of the year you dont have to if you join a fraternity. Yes I am in a fraternity, but Im also just letting you know of other options you have. Good luck and I dont care as long as you fuck the Res Halls in the end.

Remember just because your bones are broken dosen't mean they wont stop bullets from hitting me.
You can opt to just not sign up for a dorm room, but the chance that they catch you is still there. Not sure if they check or not. But, the contract you signed for a room is a year long contract, and the only way out is to join a frat, drop out of college or die. Assuming you don't plan on doing either of the 3, you're stuck paying for it next semester whether you live there or not.
I'm guessing by your Seek registration date, you're a freshman (unless you were late to join the fun). So you can not sign a contract when the time for renewals come up in April or so. But as I said, if they catch you, then you're in trouble.
This thread makes me laugh. I would seriously suggest not just moving out. It is a risk that you might not want to take...that's a lot of money to forfeit. And if they do catch you and charge you you have no legal ground to stand on. Agree with it or not, they will pretty much just be able to take your money.
Also, if you just leave they can charge you for improper check out. And breaking your contract, and a slew of other things, and if you dont pay, they can make you not graduate or be able to sign up for classes.
And the family friend thing doesn't make you elidgible to move out. Only works if they are your family.
Ohh and Emptysoul good job being a giant tool and making the greek community look bad by your comment.

A way that has worked before is talk to the professors that teach the classes you enrolled for next semester. If they agree, you will drop the class, but would like for them to leave a space for you because you are going to sign back up in a few days. It depends a lot of which professors you have and if they understand how bad the dorms are. When your classes are dropped, you can get out of your contract. When that's done, go back to your professors and tell them to put you back in the class.
Sounds like you need to move to another place. Different halls can have radically different enviroments. Maybe you just have a lousy one.
It wasn't the environment I hated. Although I had a couple bad roommates, I had friends in the dorms and generally had fun. But the living conditions are crap. The rooms are tiny and falling apart. People would leave the bathrooms a mess. The food was shit. And the dorms are expensive. I'm paying a lot less each year, and I have a room to myself (and its larger than a TJ room that's shared with someone else). I have my own bathroom, and if it's disgusting, it's my fault and not someone else's. I don't have to eat some horrible food. I have a lot more freedom. I am a hell of a lot happier living off campus. And I'm saving a shitton of money too.

First, how did he make frats look bad? Second, I am thinking you are fucked for this semster, though next year, you can do what I did and just move out. If you do, make sure you find a place like I am living in now, and you don't have to sign a year contract, that way if they try to charge you, you can move in. And if they don't have a room ready, I would throw a serious shit fit.

Without the prior mentioned circumstances your only other option is to pay them $1,600 in order to get out of your contract. When you sign at the beginning of the year to live in the dorms there is a clause in there that says that you have to stay in there for the year unless the conditions that you mentioned earlier or the $1,600 penatly. They changed it a copule of years ago to screw everyone worse.
