So, what are you guys' thoughts on Apple's announcement on the iPhone? I think its going to completely change every day life, and in 3 years, everyone will have one. I don't know how much of an impact it will have this year though.

Man, if I had money, I'd invest ALL of it tomorrow into Apple.

I don't think it'll do much at all. When the iPod came out it was one of a kind. The only DAP to use the 1.8inch drive which allowed for tons more storage than any of the flash competitors. They also made a large screen and better navigation. Now they're entering in a market which is already well developed for. There are few real innovations in the "iPhone" Also it isn't UMTS/HSDPA. So no 3G. When the "iPhone" is released, almost every other smartphone on the market will be 3G compatible.

It may do well in the short term but definitely not the long term.

I refuse to ever go back to Cingular. If they offered it on T-Mobile or in unlocked form, I'd definitely consider it in a couple years when I want to replace my Blackberry Pearl, but I had Cingular for 2 years and they were horrible and would never go back.

As far as innovation goes, the interface is amazing and I'd definitely consider it innovative. But at that price, it's hardly going to put a dent in the market, especially when a lot of people are content with the extremely basic phones that come free with a contract.

Hopefully this will convince companies such as RIM, HTC and Palm/Treo to come up with something like this.

Although I must disagree with Steve Jobs' little speech about how all the other smartphones suck and this is the smartphone to end all smartphones. I'm not sure what phones he's been using, but I have a Blackberry Pearl and it's awesome and very easy to use and has a ton of features. Same with the Dash I played with at the T-Mobile store, and I've heard good things about Treos as well. Plus, my phone was a fraction of what the iPhone is. If I had the money and if it wasn't Cingular, I'd definitely consider getting an iPhone because I'm one of those dumb Apple fanboys that everyone hates who has to have anything and everything with an Apple logo on it, but right now, I'll stick with my Blackberry and T-Mobile and have a much cheaper phone on a much better network.

My fiance was talking to her dad this morning about it, and apparently, Apple's stock jumped like 8 point almost immediately after the announcement.

A very good investment for engineers and business people, among others.

Little old English teachers like me will stick to our single-core laptops and non-picture regular cell phones if only to save the money. Great gadget, but I wouldn't use it so much as to get my money's worth.

But it sure looks fun to play with.

Not really. I wouldn't touch it if it doesn't come down in price. There are far more (lower cost) all in one smartphones, and hell, I don't even like to use those.

better idea - get a 30GB ipod for 249, a canon sd600 for $220, and a phone for 40 bucks. It costs the same as an iPhone, but holds more music, takes better pictures, well - a phone is a phone,AND these devices get better battery life when you use all of them than if you used all of the features on the iphone.

IMO the only benefit you get with the iPhone is "all in one" and a large touch screen. if this was what the ipod with video should've been (no phone/camera features, and ~40-80gb) and was about 299-399, i'd buy it.

I dont think that i would like it just because it would be impossible to browse your phone book with one hand. I can flip open my phone and browse for a number with just one hand, which is handy for ordering a pizza while driving or something similar. With this, it would seem that you would need one hand to hold the "phone" and another to touch navigate. Bum deal unless apple invents autopilot.
