Hi everyone.
Surprisingly enough, I'm making a post not to flame, so bear with me!
I'm an Editor-in-Chief of The Mineshaft, which is an underground newspaper that you may or may not have seen or heard about on campus.
Before I go on, I'll just make it known that if you'd like to receive an electronic copy of the paper every week, send an email to thenewmineshaft@gmail.com with "subscribe" as the subject. As for hard copies, they are sometimes very hard to catch, and usually very few last more than a day, but we're working to possibly produce more.
The reason for my posting here is that, since we are a newspaper all about serving our readers (you all), I'm looking for constructive criticisms, comments (good or bad), and suggestions for what we can do to make a better paper for you. I'm very open-minded and willing to listen to whatever you have to say. If you wish, you can private message me as well.
Thanks for your time, and I hope there can be a productive discussion on this thread.
Ben Williams
The Mineshaft, Editor-in-Chief

Sigh...well that's a given. We don't have any reason to sue the university anyways since we're completely unaffiliated though, so no worries there.

I have to say that I greatly enjoy reading your edition of the news...even if it is biased and, sometimes, senseless. Personally, I just enjoy the layout. I wish you guys could publish more. I took journalism during high school and I appreciate the effort you put into it, and at the very least making your pictures not look like pixelated midget nightmares. Anyway, keep up the good work!
If it's possible, could you make the electronic edition easier to read? I start reading and then everything is always continued on another page, so I have to scroll all over the pdf to read it.

Would you mind elaborating on the biased/senseless comment? Thank you for the input regardless.

That's, unfortunately, one of the disadvantages of 8x11 printing. I find that's it's pretty easy if you open the pdf in Acrobat and just use the toolbar at the bottom to jump pages.

I don't mind that the story is continued on another page. The problem is that one story will start on page 2 and then continue on page 8. It would be better if it started on page two and continued on page 3.

I will say that the one political article that I read in it seemed very fair to me. It could have been that it was just playing to my own biases, but I really tried to be critical and found it very fair. While other articles may have a bias, thats my $.02

I guess I'll take devil's comment as a compliment. I tried my best. Anyway, I'm having a shit hole time in my life dealing with my folks splitting up. On top of that (in the great irony we call life), I'm getting married in May. I really can't devote the time I need to a project like that. We were paid for 10 hours, but I worked considerably more than that during the week.
Does the Mineshaft have intentions of becoming an RSO or will it remain stricly underground?
Unfortunately I can't answer that question at the present time. We've of course had discussions regarding the subject, but even if we were to decide to pursue RSO status, it would be an inopportune time to say the least.
The bottom line is that we want to keep printing without worry of how we're going to afford production costs. If becoming an RSO alleviates that concern and is the only way to do so, then I'm sure it will be strongly considered.
