In regards to a recent request by our student body president I wanted to see just how popular social Networking sites were.

No, and I really can't stand them.

P.S. Ha, know I'm in Rolla when I see [18, 22).

Without getting into too much detail, I think it strengthens an unnecessary dependence on old acquaintances. I know a lot of people that waste countless hours "pimping" their MySpace page and messaging old friends who they will never see again, and even who weren't that great of friends in the first place. Instead of actively engaging in meeting new people, they hold onto that small thread of hope that they will be "Best friends 4-eva, LOL" and never live down the good ol' days of college or high school.

There already exists cell phones and e-mail for the people that really matter.

Note, I'm not saying this happens to everyone, but it has happened to enough people I know that I've grown to despise social networks like these. Now, I realize that they are good for some, but not for me.

Says the guy who just created his own blogging site.

Personally, I don't use myspace, mostly for these reasons, however Facebook has somehow managed to successfully encourage an environment on the internet where people are who they really say they are. I find it very helpful in keeping up with old HS friends.

Oh, and fuck myspace.

I'm only using Facebook and MySpace to search out old acquaintences to whom I can send wedding invitations. I suppose it was my fault not keeping in touch with them in the first place, though.

My reasoning is simple.

1) Real Friends > eFriends
2) I am an intolerant fuckhead and had something like 2-3 friends request everyday. Now this is not to say that i am a popular guy, but to say that some people just whore out their account so they can brag to people about how many eFriends they have.
3) People don't get the hint. If I don't accept you as a friend the first time I am not going to do it the second or the third or the thirty-fucking-ninth. I seriously used to right on peoples walls. "Don't ask me to be your friend again. I hate you." Then I get a reply like, "AHAHAHAH gewd 1. bff4eva. b my friend. lo9lolol!"
4)Seriously some people get way to addicted to this shit. I have a friend who checks hers like 5 times daily. GET A LIFE!

Quitting facebook was one of the single greatest decisions of my life.

One good part about it. I bet my friend that she cannot go without facebook for one day. I bet her a dinner for everyday she checks it. I have gotten free dinner ever since.

I use facebook if for nothing else to plan parties, it is interesting how word of mouth and word of the net compare.

I am friends with some old friends, but have not tried to keep in touch. The whoring wears off after awhile, at least it did for me

i mostly use facebook as a tool. rather than try and migrate a number of address books from email, cellphone, and little black books - i just use facebook to contact people. even my sibilings and i stay in touch that way. its also useful to plan events and share pictures with people back home.

My 50 year old mom uses facebook and myspace both. She keeps trying to tell me how cool it is, how I should sign up.

I use facebook, mostly just to keep in touch with current friends (I use it instead of email with them)

I'm 18. I used to keep a myspace and a facebook. Then last year I came to realize how stupid and pointless they are. So I stopped bothering with it.

facebook is nice to use as an informal messaging system. like lostboyz said, it is nice for planning parties and such. I have also used it to find a couple of friends from high school, I dont care about most of my high school friends, but a couple of them are nice to have back.

BTW, old school letters are still the best way to talk. you feel alot more special when you get a letter than when you get a facebook message.

I find myspace to be a good tool for stalking people.
