Don't care if it's bought or built. Basically, I have 4 different ways i'd like to hear sound come out of my computer, and am tired of manually switching the cords out.

I would like to either purchase or have someone tell me how to build a 4 to 1 headphone jack switch for cheap.

Lemme know what you've got.

Such that you can run 4 lines into one device and have it come out a single plug? Or that you want one line to service four different headphone/speaker sets?

I would like 1 input line, and 4 output lines if that answers your question.

If you only need use of one thing at a time probably all you'd need is to get some headphone plugs from the Radio Shack and wire 'em up. If you're utilizing several ouputs at the same time, you'd probably need a small amplifier built in. A few batteries and a 351/741 op-amp or a lm386. Had I the parts and time I'd see what I could do but currently I have two other projects, more pressing and of a much greater magnitude, to keep my busy.

I will be using only 1 audio source at a time, but don't know what to buy to wire together. Tips?

you could get a small project box and run a short cord (that you cannibalized from some burnt out headphones or other accessory) to the audio out on the computer. drill 4 holes for 4 audio ports on the outside of the box, then install 4 of those panel-mount female plugs in those holes. run the positive side of the input cable to the positive side of each of the ports. remember that each of the ports need both a left and right input. you can then run the negative from each side to 4 different on/off switches in parallel. run the negative side from the input cable to each of the switches. label the switches, then run a wire from each of them to their respective audio port. screw the top of the box on and plug it in. you're good to go. if you only have one on at a time, you should have no problem with amplification. i hope this was helpful, it should only cost 10-15 at radio shack, depending on the switches you get and if you already have some wire. if i am wrong, and this wont work, please somebody correct me. i have had a very long weekend and i need a lot of sleep.

It reduces the sound quality to absolute shit. I'm not very picky, but it's just too far below what I would like.
