 Post subject: Moving off campus

So I'll have over 60 hours at the end of this semester, and I want to move off campus. I thought that this made me eligible to move out, but res life is telling me that the 60 hour rule only applies at the beginning of the year, and since the contract is for a year, there's no way to get out. Has anyone successfully moved out because they had 60+hours mid-year? I'd think there would be a way to even get out of the contract by paying a fee(s), but reslife is telling me I can't move out period.

We recently are going through the same problems getting a new roommate. From what I recall i thought each semester was financially independent on all fronts, but it seems like reslife wants a guaranteed full year of shite services. Sorry I'm no help but I think its a bullshit system through and through.

Maybe try "moving" through a fraternity

I dont know how it works now, but a couple years ago if you were eligible to move off campus and wanted to do it mid school year, they just charged you something like a $600 fee for breaking your contract and let you move out.

You sign a 1 year housing agreement. I don't care who it is with, they are going to want your money for 1 year. I know Investment Reality dosent' care half as much as Res-Life about why you can't finish your 1-year contract.

Go to the Res-life office in Norwood and talk to Jennifer Nixon. She'll have all the answers you need to find out where you stand.

I don't have any sort of housing agreement with my landlord. I have been here since May of 04 and have never signed a single thing (other than rent checks...) for my apartment.

Ditto (but since March 06). It's a double-edged sword, though, as he's free to evict me whenever he wants with no notice, but I don't really see that happening. Aside from that, he's a nice guy as opposed to the mostly dickish people at Res Life/Investment/anywhere else.

____ Residing with a grandparent or sibling (siblings must be over the age of 21).

2. Enrolled as a part time student and taking eight or fewer credit hours.

3. Married student.

Yeah, I've got that also. I setup a meeting for tomorrow with Jennifer Nixon. I'm fine paying a fee if that's what it takes, because I did sign a contract after all.

Since we're throwing down random factors of 2.....

Renting from investment reality is 2^10 cooler, cheaper, easier, neater, and better than renting from res life. You'll also take note that if you need to cancel a contract with investment realty they'll work with you on the matter.

There are 2^98 jerks like you that make living on campus unbearable.

Responses I got from Nikki Glenn at Res Life:

Unfortunately, meeting one of the parameters in the document I sent to you and having it approved is the only way to be released from your contract.


Q: What about paying some kind of fee to get out of it?

We don't have a breaking fee unless you are approved for one of the parameters in the waiver. The fee is not always applied when the waiver is approved, but the University reserves the right to apply it.


Q: But is there some way I can just break my contract?

No, If you're in a contract, you'll still be charged for your room in the residence halls even if you are living off campus.

I had the exact same problem at the beginning of this semester.

Basically you are screwed. Unless you meet one of the parameters on that list posted above, you will not be let out of the contract. It pissed me off to no end and is ridiculously strict. Unfortunately, you are stuck till May.

get a frat to give you a bid card, but communicate to the frat you just want their help to fuck ResLife, and don't actually want to live there.

edit: i should mention that i have never tried this, but it certainly seems like it should work. if you want to try this, you could always just go up to frats and tell them you hate reslife, and want to stick it to them, and would they help you leave the dorms.

wouldn't a bid card entail a contract with the fraternity?

which are on their terms, and not a satan contract that is impossible to get out of. Its funny how everything else is a semester by semester financial ordeal but reslife seems to guarantee their money better then the rest of the university.

Just had an idea, a long shot, but sign up for classes late (if you are high enough that the classes you want will still be available) so it will appear as though you are not returning, then sign up pay the late registration fee ($200 max) and go on renting with a lesser evil.
