I am looking for a place to live next year. Me and the roomies were looking at Collegiate Station. Does anyone that lives there now have or had any problems? Is it worth what they charge?

And whats the best deal that you have gotten?

No.

Well, look at everything in person first, and make your own call. The "pool" is about the size of a bathtub, the "patio" is some lawn furniture, and the "computer station" is computers locked down tighter than your most conservative public library.

There's a topic around here about landlords in Rolla, I'd suggest you start with Louie.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

The rates are higher than most places from what I've heard/semi-researched. Just ask around for an apartment or co-rent a house with some guys. it'll be cheaper.

I don't live there, but when I go over to see friends I think the place is nice... dunno if it's worth it though. I think it runs about the same as the Res College, but then you have to pay your own electric bill on top of that (I looked at it last year for a bit, but it's a bit fuzzy). It's definitely nicer than living in the dorms; but I'd only do it as a last resort sort of thing.

Oh yeah, when you live there you have a CA type of person... dunno what they do exactly, but realize you won't be as independent as you would be if you didn't live there.

Stay FAR AWAY from Collegiate. I currently live there with 3 other guys. We are paying 445/month (each) with about 35/month (each) for electric. Some of the problems we have had included:

-Shitty carpet that sheds everywhere.
-Single-pane, poorly insulated windows.
-Mold is growing on the windowsills.
-The internet is really slow (my roommates play xbox and are constantly dropped from games).
-Doors to bathroom and other rooms sometimes have trouble closing.
-I'm convinced our entire building is leaning.
-Spa doesn't work.
-Clubhouse has the shittiest hours ever.
-Shitty water pressure.
-Toilet clogs easily.
-Wood panel in bathroom is moldy.
-The beds and couches that are provided are uncomfortable.

There are some other problems I have had, which I can't think of right now. Moral of the story, don't even fucking bother with this place. I hope they lose lots of money and run themselves into the ground.

As a reference, I live in a house near campus with 3 other guys. Cost: Rent+Internet+Electric+Water < $300/month per person.

It does seem to have the "feel" of a large dorm suite... like it was built as cheaply as possible. Makes sense - they're trying to make money. It feels very similar to the Res. College with larger spaces, 2 bathrooms, and deeper (shedding) carpet. I didn't spend much time looking for places around Rolla, but my friend has a nice apartment in east Rolla (like 2 miles from campus) that I think is around $300/month for rent. It has the "new" feel to it, and I like it more than the Res. College AND Collegiate.

Hmm. . . I wasn't planning on living there, I just didn't realize it was that bad. the only real bad thing I had heard was the internet sucks since it only has one IP and thus uses NAT (no VPN). The other bad thing that I thought everyone there was content about was the lack of the club house and such.

That sucks, I guess that is why they have been advertising so heavily in the Miner lately.

The TV is through satellite and you get no HD.

The internet sucks because they route all traffic through a windows machine that uses some crappy routing software that they don't how to use and didn't pay anyone to set up correctly. My friend got access to the whole thing with the default passwords and uncapped his bandwidth. They figured it out eventually, but I think all they did was change the password. (This is all stuff my friend told me a few months ago, so again, fuzzy). Anyways, think of sharing a 15mb line between however many people live there.

I think you would be better off finding some other place to live.

The people that run Collegiate don't care about anything other than getting your Rent.

Cool, cool. Thanks for the input. I'm glad I asked before being sucked in.

I also live at Collegiate Station and it sounds like you're having personal issues.

-If your carpet is still shedding you're living in your own shit, vacuuming it 3 or 4 times takes care of the problem
-Take another look at the window, it's double pane...the grilles are in between the two
-It's not mold, it's mildew. I've spoken to the manager and all the windows are to be sealed once summer weather hits to prevent condensation...ie mildew
-Internet 1900kbps down/768kbps up...hmm fidelity doesn't offer that option. 5 meg split between 3 people = 1667kbps down/171 kbps up
-Put in a maintenance request. I've personally put in a maintenance request to have my fan looked at and the problem was fixed within 24 hours.
-I'm convinced you're ignorant
-The spa does work, you choose not to use it. The manager told me that an additional heater is being put in due to high interest in having the water hotter.
-I remember filling out a survey the first month or two concerning clubhouse hours. Oh wait it's right here in front of my face. Clubhouse is open until 10P M-TH, midnight F-Sat, 9P-Sun....what's your problem? Do you ever get out of your room?
-Water pressure, no problems there
-If the toilet clogs you must be a fat ass, you need to go the clubhouse and use the treadmill or elliptical that you never use
-Wood paneling usually covers the wall, I think you're talking about the baseboard. It's a fact of life, if you don't keep your shower curtain closed your base board will get wet and mildew. Stop being a pussy and wipe it off.
-The beds and couches aren't any less comfortable than the dorms. Keep living on a twin, I'll take my full bed and put an egg shell on it.

I realize that all of us at collegiate station have seen problems, no cable and internet for the first 2 months, but those were due to being new construction. Any new construction has bugs that have to be worked out during the first year. We have cable, we have internet. The computer lab has office/internet and is available to everyone 24/7 to print off anything they want as much as they want. If you're unhappy that your water isn't hot enough put in a maintenance request to have it turned up, it's no extra cost to you. Anyone can look at res-life prices and see that they are all higher than here, 98% of them at least.
Now if you would like to live in a shitty 70 year old house then do that. Some of us have a higher standard of living and prefer cleaner living conditions.

obviously there are two sides to a story, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Yes you can live in a 70 year old house, and pay half as much. Or if you have high standards there are plenty of rentals in rolla that are relatively new or newly renovated that are significantly cheaper then collegiate station.

If you want a midway point between dorms and an apartment I guess its your ticket.
