Anybody willing to help me setup university wifi on my Ubuntu installation?

IT people are not willing to help because "Linux" is not supported.

Well, I had to fight this through my latest desktop, but here's where I found all the information I needed.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD ... sSupported

EDIT: BTW, mine was a Marvell 88w8335+88w8010 running under Gutsy (7.10), and it wasn't supposed to work, but ndiswrapper made it so.

You should email Dan Uetrecht and see if Linux is really not supported... seeing how we're Missouri's Premier Technological Institute after all...

With Ubuntu 7.10 and my Intel wireless card on my laptop I just set it up just like you would with Windows, and put in my username and password, and I was on.

I run 7.10 on my laptop with the restricted broadcom drivers. It is fairly stable, although once and a while it will just stop working.

I've had pretty good luck with broadcoms using their restricted drivers. It should be availably within the Restricted Driver Manager

The wireless card on my laptop, which is a Dell 1390 (using the Broadcom 4311 chipset I think) will work with both fwcutter and ndiswrapper under Ubuntu 7.10, but would not work with any of the MST wifi points when I tried it. When testing it in Kelly, Comp Sci, and the library, I could connect to the MST connections (WPA, PSK, and open) but I would be disconnected only after a few minutes and it would take a couple minutes afterward to reconnect to the wifi point, though I could stay connected to my floormate's and my routers (both Linksys WRT54G). I'm not sure if the wifi issue is with the access points or my card, but I was unsuccessful at getting my wireless to work with any MST wlan connection.

I've installed linux for a number of people-If I had any time, I'd offer to take a look in person.
