I was watching a video in VLC media player and I could hear the background music but I couldnt hear voice at all. I tried it several times with other files of the same type (.mkv) and none of them work. Is this a problem with VLC or what?

Pretty sure this happens when VLC doesn't have the video codec, but has the audio codec

Do you have 5.1 speakers? I had an issue where my sound card was set to 5.1 but I was playing a game through my headphones so I was not getting any of the middle channel. Most movies have voice mainly through the center channel so if your computer is trying to output to one and you don't have one than all the information on that channel is being lost.
Could be a long shot but just something to look into.
