I'll tell you what is NEEDED... all of the poll questions are nice... but they are just icing on the cake. Seek42 needs an option:

That might work for windows... but an option that uses:
smb:// samba proto.
smb://124.235.33.55/tmp/music/cool_guy.mp3 <- *nix based

This way I, a linux user, and all of the OSX users can browse the forums with ease if they have their browser set up with samba. The file:\\ thing might work well for windows... but not anything else.

1. Why the fuck is this in the 'requested polls' topic? Start a seperate thread for gripes.

2. Your idea is flawed, it won't work. smb:// is not a standard resource indicator. The only reason it works for you and any OSX people is because some piece of software is linking it to the appropriate ports. In your case, it's probably gnome-vfs. I'm not sure what OSX uses. Anyway, by using smb:// you'd be relying on that piece of software, leaving out all those who don't use gnome-vfs or whatever.

Also, using smb:// would break Internet Explorer. IE doesn't use the smb:// convention. Since a good 99% of people on here use IE, that would be Bad.

A better idea is to detect "Windows" in the User-Agent string when searching. If found, then generate a page using file:// . Otherwise use something else, be it smb://, samba://, cifs://, or whatever.

castrite: I know it doesn't work with IE... I said you could choose what you were using. Windows or other. Windows would stick with file:, linux would stick with smb:.
