Anyone ever kept a snake in the dorms? I have a small garter snake I'd like to have at school but I don't know how hard it is to get by with it and such.. or what the penalty is if you're caught or something. It doesn't smell or anything and it's just as quiet as a fish or whatever.. I wouldn't think it'd be a problem as long as the RA doesn't know or whatever.

Many people have had and will have snakes and other reptiles. As long as your room mate is ok with it (or you don’t have one) you should not have any issues. I think the best thing I have seen snake related was the girl on 2 that had an old TV sans tube. With a piece of plexi as in the front as a snake home.

Yeah, don't even bother making sure its cool with the RA. In case it isn't, this way is easier and for god sake keep it quiet (figuritively). Only let people you trust know about it, and even then I'd be hesitant. Just be very low profile about it and you could even keep a cat as long as it was mute as long as its cool with your roommate no one needs to know.

Or better yet don't move into the dorms have your parents sign for an apt. somewhere so that it looks like you are living at home in Rolla (if you don't meet the credits requirement) and screw the dorms completely. Why should you worry about keeping a pet like that in the first place, its none of their damn business, except that the place is run by Nazis, but I digress.

Yeah, rumors say that there have been quite a few non-aquatic animals in the dorm. From what I've heard, the way to get past it is that no one cares except for the higher ups. So, as long as you don't have them come visit all the time, you could probaly be the one responsible for more of those "rumours"

Keep it quiet and covered. The more people you let know, the higher the chance they tell someone who will run their mouth to the RA. I wouldn't recommend trying it unless you have a single, but some roommates can be cool enough to let something like that slide.

I've known people to keep rats, hamsters, snakes, and I think a few lizards in the dorms. Usually no one cared, including the RA, but I wouldn't risk letting anyone in a position of power know about it.

most ra's won't give a flying fuck unless something like that attracts the attention of people who might call them out on letting something like that slide

i.e. anal duty teams, hra's, rd's, and other complete fuckwads.

just make sure that it can't be seen from the door....or you could put a pan of water on top....as long as it lives underwater....

Some friends of mine got busted by the Malignant Cunt(tm) for a turtle.

The worst part was she was just walking by their room and saw an empty vodka bottle first.

Christ, I hope karma kicks that fat fucking bitch in the face. With a golf shoe.

I have a couple of friends who had ball pythons in the dorms last year. RA's knew about them but didn't care so everything was cool. There was an RA on Kelly B back in the day that had a cat. Everyone just reffered to it as his "book"...it seemed to work out pretty well for him.

In 99, on 4N, the guy in 422 had a kitten in his room... it got through the closing door one night while the duty team was coming by, and we had 2 guys run interference on the team, while another guy blocked its path...eventually, I scooped up the little shit machine and hid him as he ran by my room. The duty team either didn't know...or didn't care.

Sigh...those were the days.

Hear, hear!

About the snake thing, It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Things to keep in mind:

1. You can't just keep it's terrarium in the open, believe me. The UMR dorms have something of an open door policy. People are friendly, wander into rooms to introduce themselves randomly, that sort of thing. Some people are irrationally afraid of snakes and their idoicy may cause them to rat you out. And even if you are the hermit type it may be hard to keep any sort of privacy if you have room mate because they will probably want to participate in normal society.

2. Hiding Ideas: Whatever you do, dont just put the glass terrarium in a closet or something like that. Your best bet is to put the whole thing in a very big cardboard box, and then hide the box. Because of the sun lamps or hot rocks (or whatever you use to keep your reptile warm) fire safety becomes an issue with the covered cardboard box idea. Just use common sense. Don't leave the heat on when you're not around, that sort of thing.

3. Moving in: Do it slowly. Move-in day is busy, and RAs will be in and out of your room. Move everything except snake-related stuff in. Once everything has calmed down (you and your roomie are checked in and the RA has moved on to take care of others), then you move in the snake stuff. Hide it in boxes on the way in. Once the snake's terrarium is set up and hidden in your room, you can move the snake in. Carry it in an opaque container, of course.

4. Feeding: I've never had to deal with live food in the dorms before, but here's a tip: Fish are within the rules. I once had a pet garter snake before, so I know they like eating goldfish out of their waterbowl. I don't know what you feed your snake, but you may consider switching him to this diet. Then you don't have to worry about hiding the fish. You can just keep their aquarium out in the open. If you do pinkies or worms or something, I don't really know. Good luck.

5. Leaving UMR: When you leave UMR for whatever reason, dont leave the snake. Even if you're just going to be gone for the weekend. Too much can happen in a couple of days. Your room mate might decide to snoop through your stuff (in search of porn or whatever) and find the snake. What if the snake gets sick and pukes up a half-digested goldfish? Or if the snake dies? That'll stink up the place and your roomie and probably everyone on the floor will find you out. Worst case, you leave the heat on and burn down TJ. Just bring the snake home with you.

6. If you get caught: First of all, DONT GET CAUGHT. It really won't be hard. But if you do, it wont be a big deal. It will be made even easier if you had permission from an RA. But, like I said, some people are stupid when it comes to snakes, so I wouldn't chance actually asking your RA. Maybe wait till you get to know him.

Well, that's all I can think of on the subject. Just be smart. If you get caught, you'll realize how very stupid you are. Dont be that guy. It's not fun.

Really? I know J**** B***** had a rat, but I didn't hear anything about a cat, and he didn't get busted for it.

I love cats.....but why someone would want to keep one of them in a 14x9 dorm room is beyond me. Cat shit and cat piss stink really bad...having a litterbox in your room would proably reek...
