I just love being in a building where there is still asbestos!

Lots of buildings still have asbestos. Tons. Go into a city and try to find an old building that doesn't. As far as this kind, the asbestos tiles have very little asbestos that can become airborne. Many DIYers routinely remove the tiles from their homes (they were very popular in basements), using power scrapers and mastic remover -- and don't experience any adverse effects.

I suspect the above AC was written a by a TJ tool. Funny stuff. I'm so glad to be a GDI (not an official member, but just an independent). To think TJ might really have taken years off my life. Funny how this kind of stuff isn't touted nearly as much nice things about campus like solar car or something. We need more fairl and balanced reporting, in the paper and on the website, of course that's not why they're there is it. Arbeit Macht Frei! A happy tool is a submissive tool, and everyone is happy here! (As their little world goes to hell in a handbasket) The RAs will tell you "happy, happy, joy, joy" and we'lll all do the Ren and Stimpy dance until we become a bunch of smurphs. (I think the blue just spread from there balls since all there was for breeding stock was smurphette, but I digress (a lot, incidentally, it kind of reminds me of the dorms, few women and everyone pretends to be happy (I digress more.)). At least Evie's gone and that is something to celebrate, but only a little because you little proles are still under the jackboot of reslife. So drink up your victory gin and remember Res Life week is coming up soon, and they'll be watching you.

Who pretends to be happy in the dorms? When I visited campus I got an objective opinion of them from real people when we walked around and looked at rooms. UMR gave me the most objective impression of any campus I visited actually.

At KU we visited a dorm where a group of rastafarian-types playing hacky sack and smoking weed outside the front door. The tour leader made a very obvious detour way out of our way just so we wouldn't get close enough to see them. When we did see a dorm, the room was one of their newly remodeled suites. When I took it upon myself to go look at a "normal" room it was much crappier. I had similar experiences at MU, only at MU they don't let you loft your beds lol... Although UMR isn't letting students in the new Res College loft their beds either. Can't scratch up the new furniture!

Say what you will about TJ, but nobody ever claimed it was the Hilton. It's pretty crappy, but I'm a firm believer that life is what you make of it, and our room this year should be great, even with the asbestos hanging from the ceiling. And after I reach that magic number of credit hours, I'm looking forward to getting even more freedom outside of Res Life completely.

Nicely put. I totally agree.

Question about the ceiling: Is that in EVERY T.J. North room? I thought I heard it was just on seven for some odd reason...

What a small price to pay, to pay more then everyone else. Go Res. Life!

Hmm, the students who are being displaced to the hotel should loft those beds!
I just bed the maids would love that! Also have countless power strips coming off the wall blowing the circuit breakers!

The beds in the Res. College (are supposed to) have extendable legs. Home made lofts arn't needed.

I never pretended to be happy in the dorms, or anywhere at UMR if i wasn't.

The north tower does have some good qualities though. Ultra quiet rooms with the windows shut, solid construction (besides the elevators), and the bathrooms seemed to be kept pretty clean.

Asbestos is good stuff. Ultra-insulative properties, practically fireproof too. Too bad it is a carcinogen.

I grew up in an old farmhouse with a wood stove for heat. Behind the wood stove there was a 4x8' sheet of asbestos insulating the stove from the wall. It was there for years. Solid asbestos isn't very dangerous. It is the asbestos that is sprayed in that has a greater risk of giving you cancer.

It’s all good; its just interesting to me that they are finally getting around to removing it.

And yes the North tower is the better of the two T.J.'s by far. Had to live in the damn south tower over the summer... I was just waiting for one of those concert planks to fall or crack due to them bowing in the center, what shitty construction. For all you new freshman who were put in the South tower, I hope your close to the ground floor so you'll die instantly when the damn thing collapses. I mean the damn thing is on stilts, and far be it if a UM graduate could be contracted to build anything in the UM system (so I have heard).

Where did you get that first picture of the south tower being constructed, and do you have a larger version? That's really interesting. A rare archive from the past.
