I played a demo of somw FPS at Walmart. It was pretty cool. You moved with the d-pad, and look with the sylus on the bottom screen like a laptop's touch mouse pad. left trigger to shoot. fun.

I might ask my mom to get me one for christmas, because I dont want to drop th cash. How much does it cost? and how much for games?

I want a Zelda game. Hopefully a new one, because I kicked the shit out off OoT and MM on my 64.

oh, hopefully it has a lot of originals. Im definately not paying that much for a portable 64.

YES!!!!!!!! i was totally talking to brett the other day. i says "hey brett, we need something other than phoenix to play in 208" that is, ME208, machine design with dr. alofs. that guy is so stupid, way stupider than us. and for some reason phoenix won't run on my TI89, so that is why we need a nintendo DS

The FPS was a demo of Metroid Prime: Hunters. It's a multiplayer demo that comes with the game. I don't think the full game comes out until early '05.

The unit is $150. Games range from 30 to 50. I got a DS + Mario 64 for $186 at wal-mart at midnight last night. I'm sure they're sold out now. All preorders were sold out, so you wonn't be able to get one until next shipment, supposedly in January. There will be many originals, don't worry about that.. it's a freaking Nintendo system and it's amazing. Plus.. it can play all GBA games (has two game slots, DS and GBA). And it has better gfx than N64.

I'm just going to assume the last poster was drunk or something since I can find a reason for his post.

I've heard about the backwards compatability with the gba... does that mean that it's not compatible with the older ones? probably does :( Also, I am a big nintendo fan, but I have to admit that the PSP is looking pretty good..we'll just have to see about the software support now. But... the PSP does seem to be less than they promised earlier, but still neat (but $50 more than the DS). meh.

PSP should be around 180 when it's released.. that's what it's priced in Japan in US dollars. Yes, DS is only compatable with DS and GBA games.. not original Gameboy games.

Here's something major to consider:

PSP Battery life: 2 hours
Nintendo DS life: 4-6 hours

I think the DS will own the PSP honestly. We'll see though.

The battery life of the PSP will vary based on the game being played, but it seems that many popular, graphics intensive games will have a life around the afore mentioned two hours.

More to consider,
The Nintendo DS is not a replacement or sucessor to the GBA.
**The Nintendo DS will play GBA games, as long as you like
Single player mode; the DS does not support multi-player GBA games.
Image
Taken from the DS's user's manual trouble shooting section.

**Also, the PSP uses UMD Disks that will hold up to 1.8GB; the DS 1Gb. What does that mean, that means when formated the PSP has ~1.68GB of storage and the while the DS has ~119 MB.

The PSP gives it's media in Gigabytes. A Byte is 8 bits and the standardized convention for media uses base 10 numbering systems. That means that 10^9 bytes is one Gigabyte. Computers use base 2 or binary syatem, that counts 1 Gigabyte as 2^30 bytes.

The DS has a 1 Gigabit cartridge. Again, that's a base 10 number where giga means 10^9 bits. Since a byte is 8 bits, we divide by 8, then divide by 2^20 bytes to get the number of MegaBytes.

That's the same reason you can only put ~1.38MB of stuff onto a 1.44MB floppy disk

Basic rule of thumb when reading abbreviations on media size:
**A capital B means Bytes, while a lowercase b means bits
**Unless the packaging says different, nearly everymanufacturer uses base 10 conventions to make their products look biger. That's why that new 120GB HDD you'll get for whatever, formats to 111GB.

Prefix / Base 10 / Base 2

Kilobyte / 10^3 / 2^10
Megabyte / 10^6 / 2^20
Gigabytes / 10^9 / 2^30

::edit::

For comparison by Nintendo's marketing speek.
Memory capacity of the DS: 1Gb
Memory capacity of the PSP: 14.4Gb (1.8GB*8b/B=14.4Gb)

I don't think those specs will really matter so much in terms of quality handheld gaming. I think it will come down to whether people want a 2-hour battery life playstation 2 in their hands capable of playing graphically stunning games or a unit that they can play for many hours and not really have to worry about battery life while still getting good graphics and a bit of innovation with the touchpad perhaps (wow mario64 DS minigames are so fun). We'll have to wait and see what happens, I suppose.

By the way.. I gave a bad spec. This is a quote from the Nintendo web site from their DS specs:

Quote:
Battery: Lithium ion battery delivering six to 10 hours of play on a four-hour charge, depending on use; power-saving sleep mode; AC adapter

Li-Ion? that's the way to go... especially with a built in charger

yeah, 2 hours? that's not portable. that's not even a car trip... that's not even a PLANE trip
