IN FRONT OF THE MONITOR-- Is the risk of motion sickness worth the price you might have to pay whenever you play a first-person shooter? Games engines are constantly improving their graphics and their physics, and with realistic games on the store shelves like Halo 2, Doom 3, and Half-Life 2 comes a greater risk of nausea. The result of this realism is an uneasy queasiness that can lead to uncontrollable vomiting

"I hurled something fierce after the first level of Doom III," said Jenny, who has been playing PC games since she was twelve. "When the half-digested bits of food hit the screen I could hardly tell the difference between that and the gore from the game."
Yeah, it's satire. But this is actually becoming a real problem with new games.
Anyone here had any experience with it? During the boat levels of HL2 I began to feel a bit queasy. Most of that was because I was so immersed that I forgot to eat, though.

If i play any first person shooter for too long, i get a headache for sure. Its just you feel like you're moving, but you arent actually, so as someone tried to explain it to me. Ah well, i just take breaks every few hours, lol, damn Halo 2 is addicting. just my 2 cents

EQ made me sick. Try getting drunk in game. Is horrid. Everything all stretched out and you wobble back and forth. HL2 didn't do anything to me really, but I see where some places could.

lol, my friend couldnt play half life because it gave him motion sickness. it doesnt effect me at all. i just have to take a break once in a while from my eyes getting sore.
I played the original Doom on a 33MHz 486 with 8 MB of memory and didn't get motion sick. When we upgraded to a 200MHz Pentium Pro with 32 MB of memory, I got motion sick for a while, then got used to it.
The first computer I took to Rolla was a 300 MHz Pentium 2 laptop with 64 MB of RAM. I played Half Life and HL: Opposing Force on it and didn't get motion sick. Now I have them on Steam on my Athlon 2600 with a Radeon 9700 Pro (128 MB memory) and 512 MB of system memory and I get motion sick from playing them, but not HL2.
It's very hit and miss with me, but many times if I keep trying a game I'll adapt and the queasiness will go away.
I get motion sickness on the games where you can't tell up from down. A lot of flight games where you are indoors and the floor and ceiling look the same do it to me.

I sometimes feel sick when I watch other people play games that have a lot of freedom - typically flying games. I really have never felt this way when playing even these same games myself.

Only headaches I ever get from games are caused when I smack my head on surrounding furniture. Suffice to say, I have yet to learn that, no, leaning into it does not improve your X-Wing's maneuverability.
