On every server i enter, before 30 seconds of play occurs, i get a message that says Paused. I can do all functions except movement or aiming. The screen also gets really choppy. What is causing this? I have checked all the phone lines in my house and they are set up correctly. I have DSL.

Can you start up a local dedicated server and replicate the behavior, or does it only occur with remote servers?

I started a server myself and it didn't bring up that Paused message. I don't have anyone here that i can have set up and connect to so i'll have to check that when i get to school.

If you're using a server browser that shows the server OS type (I use HLSW), see if the OS type has anything to do with it.

nope does it on both linux and windows. I've tried 50+ servers at this point. There is no spike in the network graph either.

I cant play HL2 in offline mode anymore, anyone else have a similiar problem, no internet connection for me during break.....

Well, I've more or less exhausted my troubleshooting options.

Try searching on the official Steam forums if you haven't already.

i found one that said basically this was introduced in a patch and hasn't been taken out yet.
