I have a tcp Client and Server written in JAVA which seem to work fine if the Client tries connecting to the "localhost". However I have no idea how set permissions so that the Client can communicate with the Server while the server is running on gpunix1/2.cc.umr.edu. Can anybody help ?

Java is pretty screwy though. You running a stand-alone app or a browser applet?
Edit: All-caps in post title = Very No.

well to answer HERETIC'S question : I'm obviously not ROOT for the unix machinces and I was using port 1500. So....
And
GenPFault: I'm running a stand alone application. I eventually plan on converting into a .JAR file and downloading it on to my PDA - the client I mean. The server will remain on the UNIX machine.
I never asked a question, you asked about permissions. I told you what I know about socket programming, and it's pretty obvious you dont have root to gpunix.
