For some people who might be having problems getting windows file sharing to work right, you might check this....
Go to:
Control Panel -> Admin tools -> Local Security Policy -> Local Policies -> User Rights Assignment
And investigate whether "Deny access to this computer from the network" has guest listed in it. If it is, take it out. You might also add guest to the top item "Access this computer from the network". Just click "add user/group" and type "guest" in the box.
Unfortunately, there are some who have no idea they have a problem with their file sharing. The access denied message really sucks sometimes, but I really enjoy laughing at the ones that share out their whole computer.
This is what Admin Tools displays for me. I don't see what you're seeing. Where should I go?

You might not have the option if you're running XP Home or if that particular account isn't set as an administrator.

There are files that are legal to share. Check out archive.org. I'm sharing a lot of those, and they're ALL legal to share. I just want to take a load off their servers.

There's a difference though between being "Administrator" and being part of the "administrators" group.
Hey I got a Windows XP file sharing problem though it's not this one, maybe somebody can help me...I turned off simple file sharing of course and then allowed write access to what I had shared to my LAN at home (offcampus) only to a special account I created for myself, and then limited read access to certain shared items for the rest of my roommates on the "Guest" account, provided them w/ the PW, etc.
however, I went to login to my Guest account from MY system (the shared data is on a second storage PC I have), and I logged in as Guest...The problem is now every time I go to the storage PC from my system, it automatically logs me in as Guest, I can't figure out how to get it to re-ask for the login information so I can enter my write-access account or administrator...the first thing I tried was going into the storage PC's administrative options, into 'Open Sessions' and terminating the session...Tried purging all the temp internet files, history, cookies...Thinking that might purge it, but every time it auto-logs on as Guest and I want it to ask for new login info every time...

Log out and then log back in. If that doesn't clear your cached credentials, a reboot will.

Have you tried mapping it as a network drive?

I've rebooted both machines and it still logs back in automatically
Do you have a password set on your user account? That is a classic sign of no password.

Yeah i do, I put it in once, the first time that I logged in with it...The first time, it gave me a user login, I entered the Guest name and pw...Now it just auto-logs onto Guest...And I know it's Guest b/c the things I'm allowed to do and not allowed to do correspond to what I set as the Guest permissions.
Is there any way to tell if someone is downloading versus streaming? I have no problem with people downloading my homemade videos, but I use this machine for other stuff, and don't want someone steaming homemade videosd off my computer.
On the same note, is there any other way to monitor shares besides the computer management utility in XP?

Make a file storage box and don't care? Keeps your data safer too, since you don't have to worry about the ups and downs that an everyday use rig is subject to.
